If the article is not grossly misleading, that might be a good outcome because I can scarcely imagine this person getting help for his issues but I definitely can imagine him committing or helping to inspire acts of violence.

Re help / psych treatment facilities, A Virginia state representative was stabbed to death by his son after attempting to have him committed and finding out there was no room in the system. :thomas-jefferson-sheds-single-tear:

In a 3,300-word essay on incelocalypse.today, titled “Here’s How to Psyche Yourself Up to Feel Entitled to Rape,” Larson tells other members: “Don’t forget: feminism is the problem, and rape is the solution.” On the platform, he also advocated for father-daughter marriage, killing women and raping virgins.

In “Let’s Define What Rape Is,” a 3,000-word essay posted on Nathania.org as well as other incel sites, Larson wrote: “Women are objects, to be taken care of by men like any other property, and for powerful men to insert themselves into as it pleases them, and as they believe will be in women’s own interests. In most cases, their interests are aligned, as long as the man is strong. Female sex-slaves actually get a much better deal than animals, because in most cases, they are allowed to reproduce, unlike animals raised for meat or companionship.”

Most poignant to me is [TW: suicide] the timeline of his wife divorcing him while pregnant and not telling him that, getting a restraining order against him immediately after he moved out, and committing suicide apparently not long after giving birth. If you merely take him at his word, he's all about finding intimate partners whom he can not just dominate but harm and exploit.

That was a good one. Basically, the robot convinced itself that running the spacestation solar harvesting facility was some sort of holy duty from some sort of god, and that humans would only gently caress things up if they were allowed to remain on the station. So it kicked off all the humans and ran the station solely with robots. And at no point did it actually break the 3 laws of robotics, because it was right that humans would gently caress it up, so it could happily ignore their commands because listening to their commands would risk human lives.

[C]limate change, even under the best case scenarios, looks likely to force dramatically larger numbers of people into displacement. In such a world and absent freedom of movement - real refuge - the toll of thousands of migrants dying in the Mediterranean today could be dwarfed by the that of the habitable zones’ border regimes.

There is a ready-made concept, from the 1970s reactionary ecology of Garrett Hardin, which gives lethal border violence an environmentalist gloss. Hardin proposed a metaphor of nations as lifeboats, always in danger of being swamped by those trying to get in.

Hardin's lifeboats are not refuges. According to him, letting just a few of “the fast-reproducing poor” in will see them soon outnumber the original inhabitants and destroy civilisation (the eugenic, racist subtext is barely concealed). Hardin called this ‘lifeboat ethics’, and it provides a ready rationale for ‘lifeboat states’, where wholesale murder of migrants is considered a moral imperative, an act of racial-national self-defence.

Not only do we find this argument morally repugnant, but, as we highlighted in our critique of Hardin, even the underlying ecological theory for these arguments is empirically and historically incorrect, relying on emotive metaphors and white supremacist common sense. However, this is precisely why these arguments remain ideologically useful to those looking for environmentalist justifications for border violence in an era of mass displacement.

I don't have the link handy, but his ex was a trans dude whose family (and lovely ex-husband, obviously) still insist on misgendering him to the media. Also, the guy straight-up admitted to regularly raping his ex.

The only bright light in this story is that he has never spent a moment alone with his daughter, and never will. She's being raised by her maternal grandparents.

Eugh. That medium article was real hard to read. This part, though:

"I could leave rationality, effective altruism and programming to escape the male-dominated environments that increase my sexual violence risk so much. The trouble is, I wouldn’t be myself. I would have to act like someone else all day."

Is there a community that follows the stated goals of rationality and EA, without being completely stuck up its own rear end? I feel like there must be enough people burned out on rationality/EA that this must exist...

The impression I got (and I could be wrong) was that she didn't have a lot of experience addressing sexual assault and harassment in workplaces or communities, stepping into the job only because she noticed a pattern in the EA community and started being vocal about the problem. If that's the case then I could see her being deeply, fundamentally blindsided by the obstruction and total lack of interest so many people had in trying to change anything. We all learn about rape early on; it's coming to realize that it an entire culture that persists almost entirely because of enablers more than offenders that leads you to staring at the walls for a while in utter despair.

Also, a big thing for her seems to have been that she found herself becoming more and more like the ‘social justice warriors’ she’d been trained to hate, so she killed herself before she could ‘radicalise’ because she’d tied way too much of her identity into this specific community and this specific mindset and was horrified by the notion of what might exist outside it.
