If you're coming over as an educator it depends. Most universities and public schools will probably double check to see that they are paying for a legit MBA/PHD. Some private schools might as well. Now if you're looking for private tutoring sessions, then a decent Photoshop/Print job will probably do. Just wear a shirt and tie and looks professional and nobody will question your credentials.

A lucky redditor apparently got some free apps installed on his phone by the friendly Xinjiang border police:quote:Hello, quote:Wrote my initial post quickly at an airport. To provide a little more information, this happened at the land border between Osh, Kyrgyzstan and Kashgar, China. The local Uyghur population is under heavy surveillance and apparently all have software installed on their phones for monitoring by police. At the land border, Uyghur phones are 100% inspected and IDs from the phones noted in a ledger during the crossing. Targeting of non-Uyghurs seemed random. On the streets, there are sometimes small groups of police with a stack of local Uyghur citizens' phones going through them one by one. They carry some sort of device similar (or the same, unsure) to what was used on our phones to check citizens' phones. Oddly, the device they used at immigration had a sticker on it that in English (along with Chinese) read "Phone Hunter ID". It was roughly (maybe a little larger) the size of a portable credit card machine that waiters, etc use in Europe. Bluetooth was turned on after this so perhaps that part of it.

Pirate Radar posted:Any suggestions for stuff to see in Macau? We’re thinking of going down there for the GP in November. We’d spend a day or two sightseeing (how much stuff is there to see in Macau? Does it take more than a day?) in between race stuff. Macau is neat for a day trip. There's a unesco trail you can follow all around the old town.Check it some of the stuff here https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1110/gallery/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_Centre_of_Macau Just make sure you go to the outer ferry terminal, and not the one near the airport. I walked from the terminal past all the lovely huge casinos into the old town down to a-ma temple, and looped back around up through the castle, down through some of the town squares and other buildings, finally ended at guia lighthouse before returning to the ferry. The heat was immense but I prefer walking over paying for taxis and I was way too lazy to figure out how the bus network worked. It's worth a day trip.

Teeth suck is alive and well in HK Want a US$35 ride, but ask for it at the "wrong" time of day? (Bearing in mind a taxi licence comes with a legal obligation to take any passenger anywhere, differentiating drivers from the Uber they rail against) Teeth suck central. Even if you say the destination in Cantonese and show them it written in traditional characters. Literallly I have to threaten calling the police to be taken on a (comparatively big) fare at certain times of day. It's like they resent being asked to go where MTR stations aren't. But if I was going there... I'd take the MTR gently caress every HK taxi driver. They can't be replaced entirely by Uber soon enough.

i mean, i have little doubt that china does have effectively limitless resources for this sort of project because 1.3 billion. when you are prepared to starve and murder your own people to implement a draconian secret project like you're playing loving Civilization, 1.3 bn is a lot more people to stave and murder than a could hundred million. the difference being, starving and murdering your own people to attain nukes or build an orwellian surveillance state has ongoing costs and consequences in the real world, even if they are not immediately obvious, and people tend to presume those don't exist just because they didn't cause an immediate collapse of the perpetrating government.

Not quite the sound I think of with teeth sucking which is more of a “gently caress this poo poo” kind of sound.

Intelligence work isn't really the type of activity that benefits by throwing bodies at it, especially when there's no limit to people who will straight up just hand the Chinese what they want. Don't even need to directly bribe anyone, the good old joint venture swindle seems to be more than enough.
