I've been playing sandbox games for years, and the game is nothing new when it comes to making a world without gun shootermans. Popularity is not quality, nor is unpopularity.

I think a game where your primary agency comes from making drinks in an innovative move in non-combat gameplay, and I thought the story integrated queerness without making it the defining feature of that part of the story. There's no real consequences or reactions to how you actually make the drink. An NPC asks for a drink, you follow the steps for it, you succeed. Actual drink mixing provides lots of room for creativity that isn't taken advantage of in the game. Let the player mix in extra alcohol to get someone drunk faster, or let the player put a little umbrella in a drink that shouldn't have it to demasculate a tough guy or something. Maybe someone orders a drink to try to look tough but you suspect they can't handle it, so you mix it with less alcohol or extra simple syrup to sweeten it or something. There's a lot of potential that's pretty wasted in regards to one of its main selling points, and in practice the system kind of winds up just being an overly complicated "press to continue" button.

To say Minecraft’s success was an accident, or that it was somehow the same as other mining games just because other mining games exist, is silly. Minecraft was absolutely better than any that came before it, and, as far as I can tell, better than any that currently exist. Other games have taken the concept in different directions (Terraria, arguably Stardew Valley), so I don’t compare them directly to Minecraft. The most popular argument in this direction is “Notch stole Infiniminer.” Bullshit. Minecraft was more complete, more complex, more responsive (in terms of the development), and more friendly to the community than anything else in that space. That’s not an accident. We all think Notch is a piece of poo poo, but it’s weird watching people contort themselves into “Minecraft is actually bad and a fluke.” As far as it not being the first or only of its genre, so what? Windows isn’t the first OS, the iPhone isn’t the first cellular phone, the newest generations of the XBox and the Playstation aren’t the first game consoles, and the Tesla isn’t the first electric car. Popularity is not quality. That is technically correct. However, very few things make it to the absolute pinnacle of extremely competitive arenas against tons of alternatives by not being good. That’s just not a thing.
