Scorn sadly looks extremely dull and generic in the gameplay department. The aesthetics are amazing though,

Just curious, can you defend yourself at all in Agony or is it yet another "You can't defend yourself because that's what Outlast did even though it makes no sense here" horror game?

It's Outlast, up until the point that, yes, you can possess a demon. I don't know how early on you can manage that, though (I get the sense you're locked out of that particular feature in the first hour or so?-- I didn't watch for that long, only for long enough to form an opinion, and we've seen more or less how that ended).

So-- yet another reason that people have difficulty telling the two apart. :v:

In all seriousness, I liken it to seeing AvP for free in theaters. My only expectation going in was seeing the Queen turn everything into a bag of smashed rear end in a top hat. I got facehugger bullet time as a bonus. So, while I won't say it was time well spent, it cleared one hurdle and added a (hilarious) consolation prize in for good measure. By my absurdly low metric, it could have been a lot worse.

My expectations are similarly low with this, since I can't imagine there's a gripping narrative surrounding the game, or (as noted) crazy-innovative gameplay. It's clear their main focus is the aesthetic itself, which is fine. For me personally, the wall-to-wall weird is enough. For others, though, I'd completely understand why it wasn't.

Well that makes the game even more confusing to me - it's a power fantasy with no power but a lot of misogynistic overtones instead? Odd mix.

A big, weird contradiction of the alt-right redpill etc ideology is there's a weird quasi-ironic, absolutely sincere embrace of one's own failure that lets the believer indulge in nihilism and reject any effort at good faith...well, anything, really. It's a really screwed up self-and-other-defeatism. This article, which develops into a great insight into the whole toxic mess, calls it "steering into the skid" - the performative, self-harming embrace of personal failure- self-identification with the notion that any hope for improvement is a lie.

There's a reason these games are relentlessly negative and entirely mired in poo poo. It's how these people see the entire world, including themselves.

All I know is that Umberto Eco wrote The Name of the Rose that got made into a movie starring Jesuit Priest Sean Connery

also there was a game inspired from that work called the Abbey of Crime available for free. Very much not a terrible game... though it uses dated game design elements like isometric perspective.

Book is good! He also wrote Foucault's Pendulum and the essay that emote quotes, Ur-Fascism. (and died of pancreatic cancer in 2016.)

Yeah it's literally just a case where the essay was being brought up so often in D&D due to it being so topical in our modern blasted political hellscape that it just made sense to turn it into an emote to save time.

To be more specific, one of the points of the essay is that fascists portray their enemies as craven, lowly worms to emphasize the fascist's own inherent superiority and masculinity; but they also portray those same enemies as having unlimited power and fingers in every pie, so that constant vigilance, complete submission to the state, and the state's constant paranoia and war footing are required. Eco's example in his essay uses the example of how Nazi propaganda referred to the British as useless, feckless shopkeepers controlled by the Jews and a love of money and without the stomach or backbone for a fight, but also stalwart imperialists who held most of the world's resources and would destroy Germany if they were ever given half a chance.

This kind of paradox gets used a lot by American right-wing pundits (e.g., Muslims are backwards idiots who gently caress goats and turn their countries into poo poo-heaps; also, Muslims are perfect spies infiltrating all levels of the government in secret so that they can unleash Sharia Law when we let our guard down), and Eco's essay would get re-posted every time that came up, and eventually someone came up with the emote as a shorthand.

It's not on Steam, but I recently saw some kind of import at a somewhat distant arcade that might fit here.

Apparently there's some kind of AKB48 House of the Dead esque lightgun game? At least it had the letters AKB48 pasted all over the cabinet. I can't read Japanese so I couldn't tell much besides the demo seeming to show the player characters were shooting zombified schoolgirls, whilst also being schoolgirls themselves, and I think it was supposed to be cute..? But it wasn't and just made me rather confused.

Lightguns + Idols seems like an odd mix, to say the least.

I don’t get the appeal of visual novels. If you want to whack off, a visual novel probably the shittiest porn material. There’s nothing to them, just static images of characters standing and not doing anything.

It was just some silly tie-in, because their company overmerchandizes them, even more so than other idol industry stuff. Also, 48/46 groups tend to show up in a lot of random horror things. Like, Nogizaka46, I believe, is in some random Netflix horror film.

'Voxel' as far as I know is just a term describing how information is stored, so it could very well use voxels to store its maps or somthing.
Also, that game kinda dissapoints me because I would really enjoy some kind of a more aporachable Elona style title. But whenever I hear the term 'Monster girls' I turn away because I know exactly the kinda crap thats gonna be in it..

A "voxel" is just the three-dimensional unit of space, like a "pixel" is for two - technically yes, they could be storing their maps three dimensionally and everything would qualify:

Wikipedia posted:

A voxel represents a value on a regular grid in three-dimensional space. As with pixels in a bitmap, voxels themselves do not typically have their position (their coordinates) explicitly encoded along with their values.
