Baronjutter posted:I was at a big amazing provincial park that has a big ugly parking lot by the highway. Anything worth seeing, anything that makes the park "famous" is stuff you need to walk away from the parking lot to see and even to do a quick highlights tour should take a few hours minimum. But big tour buses full of chinese tourists will come along, park for maybe an hour, then carry on to the next famous attraction. There's a couple lovely photo-ops within 20 meters or so of the parking lot and of course the big main sign the prove you were there. Everyone just rushes to get photos in front of the sign, destroy the washroom, illegally pick flowers or just grab bits of nature that aren't nailed down, then shuffle off back to the tour bus.

it amazes me how basically everyone Western considers it hip and cool to rag on the idea that american exceptionalism is a concept that even really exists, yet nobody has a single word for this idea that literally everything needs to be tailored to china's exact sensibilities or it is trash and has no chance of working.

I've heard pundits call it "Middle Kingdom Syndrome" but I doubt that'll stick of course comparing it to American Exceptionalism is imperfect because American Exceptionalism is simply about the idea that America is inherently unique, either in its good qualities or its bad qualities. All those D&D posts about how US racism is the worst in the world for example are also examples of American Exceptionalism

Perhaps some play on words using "panda" and "pander" relating to China being exclusive and special? "The ancestral home of the panders", but there's no way to say that without being misconstrued as a jab at the speech patterns of Chinese speaking people.

I just call it Chinese Jingoism...Baronjutter posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGECg0K3gMI My aunt in law is a local artist in Hong Kong and she actually has been involved in investing and curating new artists in China. She makes boat loads of money from holding on to Yue minjun works for over 10 years. She also briefly appeared in a bite of china! So yeah, Dafun village is interesting and the market is now focused on fake Chinese art work because of the growing domestic market. Quite a few artists did break out of being a sweatshop painter but most of the work is still a little derivative.

I think the number one factor is that most people are incredibly ignorant when it comes to China. When I started studying Chinese, the only thing I would hear from people other than, "Chinese people are weird, China is weird, why are you studying chinese?!" Was, "oh, China is gonna rule the world some day! How smart of you to learn chinese!" I have a feeling if China is ever able to export their culture (I mean like their real day to day culture not monkey king and tea culture stuff) people would become a lot more critical of how chinacentric Chinese thought is. Shut, say what will about americans and our arrogance, but at least when a foreigner tells us they're going home, we don't become confused and go, "what? But you're a foreigner, America isn't your home!"

Those tour buses are quarantine units. When you see one you GTFO. It's a bit hilarious that for a long time "Chinese" culture was just whatever came out of Hong Kong. Without Hong Kong, China wouldn't even have the current small amount of mis-attributed cultural impact. Even now Chinese media is unwatchable dumpster fires to almost everybody outside. Uganda cinema has a bigger positive impact. Outside the obvious lack of any positives and just being poo poo movies I think a lot of people reject Chinese movies because it's literal propaganda.
