Darthemed posted:Counter-point: Oh yeah, this accompanied "Mambo No. 5" as the song I heard the most in 1999 and 2000. Mambo was a festival and fair thing, but Rob Thomas & Santana just filled the airwaves endlessly. I still hear it today on 105.1 in Orlando, in fact! Probably because Rob Thomas is an Orlando native. "Maria Maria" was also popular when it was new, but it didn't have the staying power and I haven't heard it in years. Fun fact: not only was my mom friends with Rob Thomas when they were young, we had the exact same psychology teacher in high school. Said teacher bragged in class once about teaching Rob Thomas and openly wondered why he never got concert tickets, so my mom messaged Rob on Facebook to ask. Turns out he hated the guy and thought he was a terrible teacher. On a more 80s note, my mom also dated the guitarist of Glass Tiger and I'm probably going to meet them for the first time when they come play at Epcot in September. I have some nice rock star stories from that time. Dixville posted:Kiss from a rose is seriously awesome and pretty timeless tbh. It always makes me think of winter because of the "when it snows" thing I guess. I'm pretty sure people will still be listening to "Kiss From a Rose" when we're dying of old age. The song fits the style of pretty much all popular music from the 70s onward and will probably still sound contemporary a few decades from now. The only reason we consider it a 90s song is that it was like a virus in the 90s and was in the most 90s superhero movie imaginable.

Madonna's "Take a Bow" will always be that one 90s song for me. I don't even really like it, but I worked at a place that had to tune into the top 40 adult contemporary and that song was on like every hour. It really strikes me thinking about it, though, that I don't think there's a pop song out there in the last 10 years that really sounds like that one. It's really mellow and subdued, it seems. Sort of like I was listening Urge Overkill's "Saturation" CD a few days ago for the first time in probably about 2-3 years and, man, that thing sort of blew me away for some reason. Maybe it's because it feels like it's doing a lot of different sounds with each song. No song really sounds the 'same' at all to any other.

Madonna's Ray of Light album was probably one of her best, She kind of came out of nowhere with it and no one expected this great dancable synthpop album, this after a lot of her 90s output was all 'hey look at my boobs!'. Though to be honest, 90s Madonna was a gift to teenage boys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAVx9RKaLPU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDM0yAJjlBo Basically every song she released off it became huge hits. I knew way too much about this because basically every girl I knew was in love with this album. And Boyz II Men was great, but I thought it was funny how there was apparently this huge group of musicans that were part of the East Coast Family that either went nowhere or maybe had local success? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlZv2cpLReM Though I can't really post about New Jack Swing without the hit that broke it though to the mainstream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb2np1HGqxg

It was a magical summer of listening to the same songs on repeat on the local radio for 13-14 hours a day in a 90 degree kitchen. That was pretty much the same playlist for the supermarket I worked at. It had a little pizzeria with a TV in the dining area which played on constant loop either Mrs. Doubtfire, The Mighty Ducks, or The Return of Jafar. The soundtrack from those blends in with the music. Later on we'd get stuff like A Goofy Movie and the episode of Wishbone where he gets blamed for knocking over the garbage cans, but that particular summer lineup was memorable. I don't ever need to see them again.

The intro to the little-seen sitcom Going Places (19 episodes, late 1990-early 1991) could not epitomize the 80s/90s cusp any better. I remember having a tape of this from the radio, and I had no idea what the title or artist name was, so it was just my nameless favorite song for about ten years until I found the name after the internet progressed enough to where I could find it.
