I'm sitting next to an economics student who says it's not linked to printing money and I'm intrigued to say the least. You can print all the money in the world and it will never make any difference if it's not being circulated in the real economy. The US government made trillions of dollars through quantitative easing, and prices didn't inflate because it was all used to bail out banks and other creditors to buy up all their toxic assets. If all that money just ends up an inert bunch of numbers on a balance sheet then it doesn't affect the real economy.

I'm sure there's embellishment by some defectors and disinformation about North Korea, but that doesn't change the fact that it probably does suck rear end to live there unless you're part of the upper levels of government or something.

the most interesting cases are all the people who defect back to North Korea.

That's definitely not even marginally close to being a concern for a country who is openly super friendly with Saudi Arabia and Israel. Yet, suddenly it's a huge concern when it comes to NoKo (it's because it presents a juicy imperialist opportunity).

Of course, I didn't mean to imply that South Korea or any other country does care much. But I don't get why there's a conflict with saying that we shouldn't go to war with North Korea and while also stating that North Korea is not good.

saying North Korea isn’t a great country to live in goes without saying, so there’s not much point in bringing it up.

I'm sitting next to an economics student who says it's not linked to printing money and I'm intrigued to say the least. AFAIK the standard (post-keynesian/MMT) argument along those lines is that hyperinflation is always preceded by a substantial exogenous shock (occupation of the Ruhr in Weimar, land reform in Zimbabwe etc.), which constrains an economy's productive capacity, leading to unemployment/underemployment, as well as shortages which cause an increase in prices. The state then increases the monetary base as a response in order to compensate for the increased prices and smaller tax base. If the state has debts denominated in a foreign currency or is reliant on imports which it has to buy in a foreign currency, it's in even more trouble. So the argument is really that the link between hyperinflation and money printing is the opposite of what's commonly assumed, rather than nonexistent.

The most interesting case is the guy who's defected back and forth several times in a boat, and I wish I knew more about him because it just ends up sounding like an import/export scheme that all the officials are looking the other way for.

also if the political organization of workers in the present period cant achieve a demand of 30 hours, then making a demand of 15 hours will be an even weaker call to action and organization because it doesnt align with where consciousness is at. any demand, action, or program that outpaces the current strength of the labor movement by that much is ultraleftism

Keynes was also making a lot of bad assumptions, like that we'd all be collecting dividends from capital markets and that the TRPF wouldn't be compelling us to work longer hours despite ourselves.
