Stories like that make me happy that the vendor I use for VoIP is so helpful. I frequently get the owner on the phone (cause it's a small shop) and he openly admits to not being a super good tech. That aside, he is absolutely amazing at describing exactly what he is seeing and how he produces it. So he may not be able to give me the exact RTP description of what's on fire, but by god can he tell me where I need to look.

He is the reason I don't do VoIP. Leave it to the people who are good at it, then come to me when it's the network stomping on your sand castle.

System 1 is set to a timezone in Canada (we are in Australia) and the time/date was altered to match ours at some stage.

Apparently it extended to Outlook loving up it's 'Sent Mail' folder so people who used that computer who said "We sent that email at X time on Y date" and arguing with the recipient about it might have been a lot of the yelling I overhear.

We don't have any dedicated IT, everything is from a third party which our company is too cheap to bring in for anything. Come to think of it...I wonder if this is related to the network scanner losing its SMB access at random rear end times.

Weird, that should have broken plenty of things, especially TLS. With the right time & wrong zone, that kind of stuff keeps working.

Surprised they aren't having other issues.

hello
poo poo pissing me off: creation timestamps for images randomly changing in gcr.io. Check the repos for the build files, no changes. What?

Start worrying that production env's been compromised as we're getting images from unknown sources. poo poo.

Have an idea out of nowhere. What happens if I alter the tags assigned to a container image?

The creation timestamp gets reset to the time when the tags were changed.

At least I didn't spend hours on it, only twenty minutes, but still. It's me. I've become the problem.

With regard to VoIP , a lot of issues don’t have relevant log event information available and can’t be reproduced/ are someone else’s problem on another network/ are people being dumb and not operating devices correctly.

Given that it’s obnoxious to dig down into these things when there’s nothing actually happening when someone reports a problem - and even still there are 99 layers involved.

I just started lab testing a system that will let me capture and retain in a searchable format 100% of all SIP messaging along with summaries of every RTP stream as seen from both the PBX and endpoint, even though we have a mix of hosted and on-premise PBXes on two different software stacks with all kinds of endpoints. After 13 years of having to be able to replicate a problem while running a packet capture (and developing a series of tricks for doing so in real-time from remote devices) I'll finally be able to just take any call example and look it up after the fact even if they're using a remote phone on an ISP-provided router.

It was like Christmas when I first fired it up yesterday using my own home router and our beta PBX as data sources and saw all the SIP messages listed off in a format even my boss could use.

Well we use Evernote and OneNote but we haven't really tried using a tablet or pen with it

Alright well if you need help downloading the Evernote app or whatever just come back later

I don't know if this is worse, or when the CFO asked me to give a tour of the server room to their 16 year old son. He used a server as a table for a coffee that I told him he couldn't bring into the server room, which got the CFO to come and tell me he wasn't going to put it anywhere and to give him a tour it's a loving coffee.

He then got really upset when I told him he couldn't put that there and that there was a perfectly good table by the door he could use. "You're going to tell me my? What are you 4? If it spills my mom will just buy you a new one god".

Yeah get hosed, he did pick it up when I clearly wasn't amused.

e: To clarify:

I'm 99% sure the CFO would have been super upset, I just really didn't want to get in the middle of it. He had the day off of school and she thought taking him into the office would be a great idea. Then when he got bored because the computer I set him up on with local admin (clean install wiped after) so he could install games couldn't play Call of Duty. I guess giving him a tour of each department was the next thing on this list.

I had assumed he was interested in IT when the CFO first asked. I'd be happy to give a 16 year old with an interest in technology a tour of a server room.

I didn't read the texts. It could be ironic. It could be a quote from that one speech he gave where he praised equality and valued human life above all else (I am making this up). Or, it could be what one would normally expect from a National Socialist Party leader. Given that Ayn Rand was just beside it, I think the 3rd option is more likely.

According to this you're close, certain early linkers had a 6 character limit for external function names so the syscall name got shortened, and the executable just took on the same name.

I've been meaning to learn sngrep, I still feed data in to Wireshark when I'm looking through things manually, but I have a beefy PC and am good at minimizing my capture sizes when possible so it's rarely slow enough to cause problems. Wireshark is kind of my hammer for which every even vaguely network-related problem becomes a nail.

The new system I just spun up is built around HOMER and their fairly excellent open source UI. The last time I tried their stuff was years ago and it wasn't nearly as nice, but this has been great so far.
