Maybe I blew my ears out at an early age (I did) but I've never been able to hear the bassist in any metal, ever, unless it was specifically mixed to make it stand out.

Sometimes you need an ear for it, but the other thing to keep in mind is that you might not notice the bass, but you would sure as hell notice if it was removed.

I guess some people just can't hear bass if it isn't doing something different than the guitar.
