While he was openly part of the lifestyle and a number of his songs are about it, he went so far as to make and sell "gently caress Christian Grey" shirts, defend the use of consent, and didn't even drink or do drugs because he cleaned up his addictions from when he was a teenager. Turns out he was actually the exact person he talked about not being.

I have worked with or known two rapists, and for each one if someone had told me I was working alongside a rapist and asked me to guess who it was, I never would have thought of the rapist. Not in a “no, it couldn’t be them” way, but I simply wouldn’t have thought of them at all. Abusers are extremely good at manipulating everyone in their lives—not just their victims. I’ve never had a best friend be one as far as I know, so I don’t know how that degree of intimacy works, but it’s pathological and hard to notice in everyday life even if you know a little bit about the pathology. I can believe a person could have no idea and think of himself as a “best friend,” especially if he were like a giant dork who likes to talk about space and Game of Thrones or national elections rather than actual lived daily experience.
