Never played an Assassins Creed game before, decided to try it and kinda randomly chose Rogue. I like the action and the pirating but by gently caress does it take a long time to actually get to the meat and potatoes of this game. Eight hours in and finally I think i can actually play the open world game without "progress more to unlock feature" text pasted everywhere.

Also I'm not a fan of the "collect everything to get something" mechanic. I'm assuming by the time i've found all the poo poo in those treasure maps i'm 90% through the game and get very little mileage of the reward.

The House of the Dead: The Second Story

Yeah, it's kind of crazy to me that people were complaining that a lot of Shadow of War's content was "just" navigating the Nemesis system because the Nemesis system is the game; without it's just another (highly polished) open world stealth-action Ubisoft style game with Arkham combat and a terrible story. I'd be happy to buy a new game of that with some new maps and additional content every few years for a long, long time before I got bored of it. Especially if they continue expanding the scope and made an actual Mount & Blade style war/siege game.

The problem is that the Nemesis system was the only good thing about the first game and the second one only expanded on it in very minor superficial ways while the rest of the game was even worse than the first

Yea like, the gameplay demo at E3 had Spidey fighting mooks at the top of a building and kept punching or uppercutting people out. Everyone was like "Okay, Peter just murdered like, 10 people."

It looks like it is going to be fun as gently caress like, holy christ a Spider-man game where you can swing around NYC with modern technology and a fluid, acrobatic combat

There's a pretty great mod called freeside open that blows down all the linking doors in between the various outdoor regions of freeside. It makes it quite a bit better than the base game. It might have been time that they ran out of but they also had to work with bethesda's jank rear end engine and they also had to make sure it worked fine on 360/PS3 hardware, so everything had to be tightened up.

Also I finished Rise of the Tomb Raider a month ago and I liked it for what it was. I didn't really bother with the collectibles, except for going out of my way to do the tombs. they're fun little excursions so they don't feel like checking off a thing on a list to me and you do get a very cool outfit for lara to change into at the end.

Does it fix the way that casino security works by removing all the weapons from your inventory and then adding them back when you left? Because having to redo all my key assignments + sit through minutes of pop-ups for each item that was added back to my inventory killed a lot of my interest in visiting the casinos aside from when actually necessary. That was really one of those times where I wish their dedication to The Narrative Experience didn't win out against basic playability.

Warframe has some really good recent changes. They introduced half of a new ui update into the game, because one of the designers played breath of the wild and liked how cool and minimalist its menus were. I can agree with that premise, and warframe's old ui could certainly be a little clunky, but they missed something that makes breath of the wild's menus work.

This is the old UI. There's a lot of negative space and the icons are not well explained, but at least you can see what items you have.

This is the new ui. They didn't put the names of items on the icons for the items. Many, many items in the game have the exact same icon (as you can also see in the previous pic), leading to a lot of mousing over every single item in your inventory to see what exactly you have. It works in BotW because every item has a totally unique icon as well as showing you the damage/defense of every item for easy comparison of its main stat. This shows you no useful information. I'm not sure how in all the UI testing that must have happened not even one person said "hey man, it'd be cool if I could see what these items actually are"

Console comparability was the woooorst. I still remember that Primm was a helluva fight the first time through, at launch. My next playthrough? After a patch, which reduced the enemy spawns from like a dozen+ to 4 dudes cause the poor consoles had trouble with it. What a lame duck experience.

MGSV: The Phantom Pain has amazing controls and is very easy to play. And this is coming from someone who considers the original Metal Gear Solid trilogy to be a tragedy about a supersoldier with a congenital defect that makes him bellyflop onto his own grenades and in front of enemy soldiers to be helplessly mowed down at random intervals because good lord are those some clunky-rear end controls.

MGSV has one of the biggest innovations of the entire series if not last console generation in that it gets away with codec calls entirely and replaces them with cassette tapes that you can listen to at your leisure as you play and which you have full control over and even automatically resume playback when you resume them later. Being able to listen to them as you actually play the game instead of having to slam on the breaks and watch two literal talking heads completely changes the experience for the better and it's really frustrating that so many people straight up ignored them and then complained that the game didn't have enough story content or complained that the cassettes should have been full cutscenes.

I've always been annoyed by how games like the Ubisoft open world games and the last generation of Bioware RPGs or Destiny just love to throw a codex full of :words:world-building lore:words: at you and expect you to just sit there and read it but that just makes it that much worse in comparison because if it was in audio form hell yeah I'd probably give it a listen while I'm dungeon crawling or whatever.

Although there are cassette tapes that feel very important but also very silly. Why did the most secretive man in the world allow himself to get recorded talking to a bunch of key characters in the plot? The info that you get in those specific tapes should have had cutscene or two.

I dunno if it's worth spoiler tagging that since I don't name anyone specific but if you got to the true end of MGSV and listened to everything you know what I'm talking about.

It's insane to think that almost a decade of games were bottlenecked by having to work on a console with 512MB of RAM and no hard drive. Like if the Xbox 360 had just not gone with the HDD being an optional accessory so many games would have been able to do so much more.

Things are great now where it's mostly a questions of frame rate and resolution across platforms rather than huge performance cuts like that. And as much as you can criticize releasing a Pro version of the PS4 with updated specs it at the very least has made a lot of devs be more considerate about making their game work in different configurations on PC.

Why would a supersoldier trying to kill you freeze in midair for five minutes so you can jaw about combat strategies and the taste of fruit bats over the codec with your buddies at home base? Sometimes you just have to make concessions in the name of storytelling.

I'm not saying "BRING BACK THE CODEC CALLS" just that it's really weird to have these incredibly huge plot points tucked away in a cassette tape and not in a cutscene or two. It was pretty clear before the game was out that it was gonna have budget problems so maybe it's not surprising though.

Audio logs in games are one of those things that are just very silly if you apply any degree of realism to them, especially with the way they're used a vehicle for passwords. If you're lucky you get a game like Prey going to the trouble of framing all its audio logs as actual recordings of phone calls and make its passwords be at least a little sensical (like password reset requests or people intentionally compromising security for the sake of future survivors) but for the most part it's operating on the same abstraction principle as to why the guy on a found footage movie doesn't just drop the camera and run.

It's especially silly in games like Bioshock where the recording device is some huge clunky single-use item rather than a discrete bit of storage like a cassette or a PDA. Like oh poo poo this monster is closing in me and I only have moments to live better whip out this giant turntable and place the stylus gently and OK time to start narrating.

Not having a hard drive in some 360s hosed up Mass Effect 2. The whole reason you have to get one set of companions before the other is because the non-HDD 360’s needed to do a disc switch between halves of the game.
