Also if there's a fire that can't be easily and quickly contained you should definitely call the fire department. I won't say there are no rear end in a top hat firemen but having a fire department is actually pretty crucial. So, arguably, is having some sort of police system, it's just that the system we have is poo poo. The training is not adequate in some places and actively harmful in others and the weird 'hero worship or get hosed' attitude is terrible. cops shouldn't be swinging their weight around, cops are there to serve the communities they're charged to protect but that's not what ends up happening. I'm not going to respect someone just because they wear a blue uniform, that's absurd. Probably ties a lot in with the military worship in America, but I'm not educated enough on this stuff to tie into exactly how.

Like I'd be more inclined to respect a fireman just on the basis of their job than I would a cop because firemen actually go straight towards danger and, yanno, walk into fires to rescue people. Media plays up being a cop as super dangerous (and from what I know cop culture does too) but it's actually usually not? Like, if everything is going right it's just going to be a lot of routine stops and paperwork. That's ideal. It's not an action movie and the idea that 'cops are on the job 24/7 so if you're a cop never let your guard down because people want to murder you just for being a cop' is a) weird and unhealthy and b) pretty culty, yet that's one of the things cited in a book I read for school written by a journalist who trained as and worked as a cop for one year. I can't remember the name of the book off the top of my head but it was pretty interesting.

Firefighters have to put out fires because that's their job, but thanks to the supreme court it has been established that the police have no obligation to prevent or interfere with crimes or to put themselves in danger (according to their personal metric for danger).
