The gimmick chip is also presumably using tim. So you do kinda need a decent bin.

TIM is not a problem with a 5.0 GHz single-core turbo, and the all-core turbo is 4.3 like normal.

I didn't realize they aren't even going 5.0GHz on all cores. Sorry about that. Isn't a 4.3 turbo on all cores really lackluster? Intel's cpus have been able to hit 4.7-5.0 all core consistently since 2011.

I really hope AMD is able to approach 5 in 2019/2020 and Intel stops leaving so much on the table.

Every single turbo step on the 8086K is exactly the same as the 8700K except for the single-core one, which is 5.0 instead of 4.7. It's a marketing gimmick or to be charitable a limited-edition anniversary label, not an actual upgrade.

It would be hilarious if they punched up the clocks and their run-of-the-mill processors are spanking the "anniversary" edition in a year's time.

Isn't that how all technology works? Pay 10x the price for a 10% gain that will be under preforming the baseline in a year or two.

Silicone Lottery posted their numbers for the 8086K today. Almost 100% hit 5.1GHz all core, 60/40 shot for 5.2GHz, 15/85 for 5.3GHz. (iirc off the top of my head)

It's a measurable difference, but YMMV on whether those extra couple hundred MHz are worth the extra hundred bucks.

Yes it's really lackluster, which is why all the reviews have been saying don't buy one.

And Intel already put it on the table. Coffee lake was what they were keeping in reserve, they pushed it to near it's thermal max to keep their edge over Ryzen. That's the reason the 8086k is :mediocre:, even with binned CPUs there wasn't a lot left. The delays to 10nm hosed them, and until that process is producing chips they're kinda stuck.

People were speculating that the 8086k would be soldered instead of TIM, but intel is not gonna change up their production line just for 50k enthusiast CPUs. AMD caters to us because the enthusiast PC market still matters to them, Intel is so big that they're kinda eh.

250W base TDP.

1950X was 180W TDP and like ~270W pull from the wall, without overclocking or graphics cards. We might be talkin 400W here. Got dang.

Man, I wonder what kind of cooling solution you would need for that 4.2 GHz overclock? I'm more interested in seeing if they made it any more video game friendly compared to the 1950x.

I absolutely love this. Intel offered a sweepstakes where people could win an 8086k, AMD responded by offering a free swap out for a Threadripper 1950x for the winners.

AMD also happens to hold several key patents related to soldering dies to heatspreaders, so it's a lot cheaper if you're AMD.

I have no idea, but Microsoft provides a pretty optimized software rasterizer for Direct3D so theoretically we could find out :monocle:

It's possible. The software renderer for Unreal with the 3DNOW/SSE extensions was pretty good back in the day.

Funnily enough Microsoft's own documentation uses a Crysis benchmark to show WARPs performance:

Maybe the 2990X could just about scape past 30fps at 800x600 at the lowest settings then? :cheeky:

“Our plan for the Naples-Rome-Milan roadmap was based on assumptions around Intel’s roadmap and our estimation of what would we do if we were Intel,” Norrod continues. “We thought deeply about what they are like, what they are not like, what their culture is and what their likely reactions are, and we planned against a very aggressive Intel roadmap, and I really Rome and Milan and what is after them against what we thought Intel could do. And then, we come to find out that they can’t do what we thought they might be able to. And so, we have an incredible opportunity. Rome was designed to compete favorably with “Ice Lake” Xeons, but it is not going to be competing against that chip. We are incredibly excited, and it is all coming together at one point. We have reintroduced ourselves to the market, gotten the initial traction and wins, we got the initial customer support, and we validated that AMD is a safe choice with an effective processor. With the Rome processor and process, we are going to be in an incredible position going forward.”
