Realising that Robert Duvall was Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird was a recent :stare: moment for me because I'd never looked at the credits beyond Gregory Peck and never connected them in my mind.

Endgame, if you mean the one directed by Joe D'Amato that stars George Eastman, unfortunately sucks (I know I was also stunned that a movie from the directing/writing/acting duo that brought us Porno Holocaust is not good) because it's REALLY slow after a fun first act.

Fortunately Lucio Fulci directed a similar but way cooler movie that's had a few different names. It should be on Amazon Prime right now as New Gladiators (courtesy of Troma!!!), but may also be Warriors of Rome 2017 or Rome 2033: The Fighter Centurions. Anyway it has some slow team building/training/machinations parts but it just completely rules and has some ambitious twists, it's one of the more original of these movies especially for one that was released several years before The Running Man. Plus even forgetting all of that it just completely rules for the cast, soundtrack, and miniature future Rome flyover shots and Blade Runner wannabe shots of folks in flying cars. Please don't miss this one. Also it has some brief training and "brainwashing" sequences like this. This isn't a fan music video someone made this is literally in the movie as is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8TiE8cuUuA
This was great! Even the models were good. I assumed it would riff on the Road Warrior, but it reminded me more of Rollerball than anything else.

The only flaw is that they don't really show the audience for the deathsport show in any way. The plot's basically concerned with the consequences of letting informatics and algorithms run everything. (It's remarkably prescient in that way.)

Amazon does weekly 99cent movie deals so I expect it'll pop up there sooner rather than later.

I hope this trend of Adkins getting actual parts where he has a lot of lines continues. Although I recently watched Boyka: Undisputed and he's great as the mostly silent hero too. Is there another Boyka in the works?

Google to the rescue on this one. Once a week or so just google "99 cent Amazon Movie Rentals" and you get a link with all of them. I'm sure there's a way to manually get Amazon to sort for them but whatever this is easier.

This week's batch is a lot of the recent DC animated movies, but also Call Me By Your Name is now 99 cents.

Cyborg and Nemesis are wild because Pyun is one of the inheritors of 80s Italian exploitation cinema after it died. (And also because he loves martial arts.)

Watching the progression of Italian dystopian films in the 80s is wild because they ripped off American hits as they went, just sort of bolting on appealing cliches as they went. Let's say the movie is set in a post-apocalyptic New York, but then they have to travel across a wasteland full of biker gangs, and there are cyborgs running around for no particular reason.

As near as I can tell, the biggest inspirations were The Warriors, Escape from New York, Mad Max, and Terminator. Cyborg combines all of them.

If there's one thing lacking from the past two Undisputed movies, it's a true villain that can stand toe-to-toe with Adkins like he did for Jai-White in Undisputed II. The guy at the end of Boyka was physically impressive but barely a character, and I thought Undisputed II had no memorable villains at all.

Streets of Fire is awash in great style and great pulp characterization--except for the main character, a big void right in the middle of all of it. Tom Cody is the straight man to everyone else being, well, interesting, and Michael Pare wasn't the Steve McQueen that Walter Hill was looking for. (McQueen also had experience with ensemble roles before being put in the spotlight.)

III had Lateef Crowder! But yeah he didn't have anything to do outside of the ring, he just looked a bit lost the whole time. I don't know what happened there, Crowder was a great villain in Tom Yum Goong even with like 2 minutes of screen time.

If you want to see Van Damme take a beating, I guess Lionheart is the movie for you.

Double Impact is a fun one too and it has Bolo Yeung, It also kicked off a thing where JCVD plays two characters in a movie, I think he did like 5 movies where he has a dual role.

is The Tournament worth a watch? It sounds pretty crazy.

quote:

A group of the world's wealthiest and most powerful men, who are themselves tied into law enforcement agencies and criminal underworlds alike, and who also control the international media with their billions, have devised the ultimate entertainment for themselves, simply referred to as "The Tournament", which takes place at intervals of every seven or ten years in an unspecified location, usually a large city.

"Contestants" volunteer, but due to the nature of the tournament are some of the toughest or craziest individuals on the planet. They are expected to kill and only the last surviving combatant will win the cash prize of £10 million offered by William Randolph Hearst. The men and women running the tournament not only view it as entertainment, but also bet high stakes on the outcome as a huge gambling tournament, serving as the source of excitement also for the millionaires.

For each tournament, combatants are selected from the world's special forces, serial killers, athletes, trained contract killers and assassins. The last combatant standing receives not only the cash prize, but also the glory and reputation of having the title of World's Number 1, and which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet contract killing price tag. Each of the contestants carries a tracking device, embedded under their skin, allowing the observers to monitor their movements, and the contestants to track each other. The tournament lasts twenty-four hours, and if no one has won, then the tracking devices will explode.

I'm surprised anyone hasn't seen Bloodsport. There was a time you couldn't walk into a department store or a discount store without immediately being buried in a flood of $5 Bloodsport DVDs.

Bloodsport doesn't have Hong Kong style or quality choreography, but it's basically a fantasy UFC before the UFC existed, and JCVD edited it himself so that you can always see what everyone is doing, a relative rarity in Hollywood-produced martial arts films.
