JRPG gdq runs are good if only because their longevity allows people the time to catch some rest since the game isn't going to be completed in the next 20 minutes.

Also, sometimes it is cool to see how they handle speedrunning games like that. Sometimes. It usually helps to be familiar with a game when it's that long though, like I enjoy the ff9 speedrun because I know the ultimate goal is to get the speedrun bonus item that is at the end of the game (the excalibur 2 that despawns after 12 hours of playtime) so it's neat seeing them get all the way to that item and survive through the countless fights along the way to getting that item and then going after the final bosses.

Granted, I'm a speedrunner myself and I've always enjoyed watching speedruns since I was younger and first found out about a lot of this stuff like 14 years ago so I've kinda always been in that target demographic and my own experiences with speedrunning makes me more than a little biased in favor of things like GDQ :P

I have a published TAS of Fire Emblem Sacred Stones though it got obsoleted years and years ago

http://tasvideos.org/1170M.html

Fire Emblem mostly switched to LTC (low turn count) over least time so TASing stopped a while ago. If the memory watching utilities for Gamecube ever get good enough I might give Path of Radiance a shot though

One of my favorite GDQ moments was when a person was going to run uncharted 1 and there were a lot of people sarcastically saying poo poo like "oh boy uncharted won't be boring at all" and then the run started and the runner started like phasing through walls and flying up mountain sides and it was great

The Red Band trailer is my favourite trailer in the world and there was no possibility that the game could live up to it.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Trailer was phenomenal, and it's the only instance I can remember where a trailer got a commercial DVD release.

The disc at least contains like an hour of documentaries and such on top of the trailer, so you're not paying $80 for 2 minutes like it's your mom. :v:

Twisted Metal Battle Royale would be cool as gently caress honestly ...... really big map, fully destructible environments, no sneaking around/camping because your cars are making big engine sounds..... bring it on

There's one JRPG I can think of that actually encourages using some light speedrunning tactics in a somewhat normal playthrough: Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song.

In that game, there's a system that sort of models the passage of time--very abstractly, but still. The idea is that some side quests are only available during certain windows. Show up too early, the NPC isn't there; show up too late, you've missed your opportunity to jump in on that story. It's determined by an invisible number called your Event Rank, which goes up as you win battles. If you don't know about Event Rank, you'll still hit a good number of side quests and have little trouble finishing the game, but if you want to see some special side quests or come close to a 100% playthrough, you need to manipulate your Event Rank, which means getting really good at avoiding enemies on the map (since that's how battles happen) and keeping track of your Event Rank using a couple of little in-game hints, like which tutorial messages show up.

I learned about that system on like my third playthrough and got really good at dodging random battles so I could do almost all the side quests in one run. It was pretty cool. Definitely not a true speedrun since I was doing a bunch of side quests, but I still had to learn a lot about manipulating invisible in-game counters and find efficient ways through zones that let me avoid as many battles as possible, or hit just enough battles to get to the right Event Rank for the next quest I wanted to do.

I played Bus Simulator 18 last night with a racing wheel and it was a zenlike joy. The story is about a city comptroller who wants to bring public transportation back to the city and in the tutorial you pick up her wife who is borrowing a lawnmower. You can slap a bunch of dumb poo poo on your bus and set up a whole fleet of them, which you can run into when you run your routes.

I also got really hosed up and started playing NFS Payback which is uh a bit rough

The game is beautiful, and for the most part I enjoyed the story. Did anyone else notice that, perhaps other than Rost, all of the guys in the game are either:

- Bloodthirsty
- Idiots
- Genocidal
- Sexist
- Evil

And the women in the game are almost universally stronger, smarter, and kinder with just a few exceptions like the 3rd Matriarch.

The Hunter's Lodge leader, War Chief leader, are both replaced by far superior women. The one guy who helps Aloy is a drunk who is inferior to his dead sister, and says later he's lucky to have 1 minute of Aloy's time.

I felt uncomfortable, like I was watching an old Loony Tunes cartoon where all the villains were stereotyped, buck-toothed Japanese... you know how you see those old racist or sexist cartoons and it feels awkward?

That's how this game felt, but towards males, and mostly white males.

It seemed like the opposite of an old black and white movie where the women are helpless idiots to be saved by the men.

I'm not arguing that the racism and sexism in those old cartoons or movies was moral or correct at all... but rather that racism and sexism still apply even if the race and sex you're targetting is white and male.

Just weird.

I'd have felt better about the game if, at least, all the worst people in the game weren't all men, and all the best people in the game weren't all women... and literally Elizabeth Faro says at the end of the game that if she'd bothered to have kids, she wanted a girl.

I wonder how the heroes and villians would've come out, gender and race wise, if they'd just made a dart board and picked gender and race of each one that way? What are the chances it'd work out as it did in the game as it sits now?

If racism and sexism are wrong, why would they be ok if you just pick a different race and sex to stereotype and hate on?

None of this stopped me from enjoying the game... it's beautiful and fun, and I liked Aloy for the most part. But wow. It just felt face-slappingly obvious what they were trying to say over the course of hundreds of characters.
