So I’m taking this extra hard because my wife and her immediately family were granted asylum based on persecution. Her grandfather fought for the ARVN during the Vietnam war and after the south fell, her mother and grand father spent years in work camps, and when released were denied most jobs /discriminated by the communist government. They were granted asylum by the US like a month before 911. My wife got her citizenship 5 years ago and her mother got hers last year but honestly, what’s going on lately has me scared shitless and I just hope I’m not over-reacting. *edit* I mean gently caress. my family fled Germany in like 1910 pre-WW1 because poo poo was getting weird in the run up to the war. I’m a family of immigrants, aren’t we all? And don’t give me they did it legally bullshit they boarded a boat and were stuck at Ellis island for a bit before being allowed in and settled in Kentucky (my blood is proven 1/5 bourbon). The kids are already being sexually abused, how long until some start dying? And of course this administration always finds a new low, so what other policies do they have in store? At what point are we as a people obligated to do something more? Iraq was a loving eye opening experience that showed me just how spectacularly hosed our foreign policy is, and how far we can stray from the ideals I thought we stood for when I joined. I’ve just been losing faith that this can be solved amicably. They don’t even put a veneer of anything over these actions anymore. They are outright stating these kids are for leverage to stop illegal immigration and to force Dems to the table. Honestly how do we come back from this as a country? How do we move past a large chunk of our country being ok with child internment camps? It’s just so hosed up.

Obama made sure that they went to trial, but were charged in such a way to keep the family together for deportation. Trump/Miller specifically want to be cruel to deter illegal immigrants. Using cruelty to deter is not entirely legal.

Presumably, they mean using US military excess building/barracks space or land to house people, not the military running detention facilities. That's the way it worked in the 2014 child migrant crisis. Unused buildings or portions of bases were converted into areas where they could be held, but the military administration was limited to providing the real estate, some barriers to restrict access in and out, and MPs who were not inside the detention area, but rather were more focused on keeping nosy people away from the detention area. HHS/ICE (and probably other agencies) were running the show inside the detention areas.
