I'm working on an effortpost to detail just how much the administration's story has changed on this. Here's what I have so far: We're going to deter illegal immigration by separating families! https://www.npr.org/2018/05/11/610116389/transcript-white-house-chief-of-staff-john-kellys-interview-with-npr We are not separating families! https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/kirstjen-nielsen-battles-senate-democrats-on-family-separation-at-the-border The Bible says we must separate families! https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2018/06/16/jeff-sessions-bible-romans-13-trump-immigration-policy/707749002/ It's the Democrat's fault we're separating families, we can't do anything! https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-press-gaggle/ We're signing an executive order to stop separating families. Now they all get jailed together! Problem solved, right? http://time.com/5317703/trump-family-separation-policy-executive-order/ Anything I should add or change?

I mean there is some validity to the criticism that abuses which went on under Obama but were ignored outside of immigrant activist groups and a few persona non grata fringe politicians like Bernie Sanders are only now getting widespread attention because the guy in charge is abusing kids and families in a rude way instead of a genteel way. But that's not mutually exclusive with hating our orange piece of poo poo president.

This guy doesn’t know poo poo about the Tet Offensive if he thinks it failed. It was initially incredibly successful, and even though almost everything they took was retaken by southern and allied forces, Americans had been being fed lies that the VC were on their last legs for a while, and now found out that they needed another couple hundred thousand reservists. (The VC also had no trouble replacing their losses) The short term failures demoralized the VC leadership but the American people’s will to continue was broken, so it was a long term victory and the communists knew it. It isn’t really fair to blame the media for it. They were reporting facts as they knew them, not just regurgitating US propaganda. It was also a really stupid war in the first place. That guy can go to heck.

The usual argument is "ah but we could have won if we drafted a million more men, shifted to a war economy, and spent a gorillion dollars overrunning the entire place like it's WWII and occupied it for 100 years" which okay maybe but nobody wanted to do that and the hawks selling the war had told America over and over that it would be quick and easy with hardly any casualties or sacrifice, and the end is almost in sight. Nobody loving wanted an insane WWII-like effort just to hang onto some French colony worth zero benefit to America, that's why the country had to be lied into it, and why support collapsed when the Tet Offensive undeniably revealed that everything we'd been told about the war was full of poo poo from top to bottom.

The American command also obviously didn't even give a poo poo about the Vietnamese at all. They planned on fighting a war of attrition as long as it took to win simply because America would basically win that by default. There were only so many Vietnamese people and hey let's just commit genocide if we have to, we must fight communism at all costs! Yes the media is partly to blame for America pulling out for reporting the facts but really, the American command is far more to blame for allowing America atrocities as well as being there in the first place. The war was bullshit before it even started and "but but but communism and Russia!" was even utter nonsense. The Vietnamese just wanted everybody else to gently caress off and leave the alone. The success of American propaganda really shows when people bring up "we should have won!!!!" as if it was a war we should have ever had in the first place. It also shows how many people have horrid opinions about such things in the first place. As soon as they start saying it's fine to censor the media they'll start letting their authoritarian side out.

My brain kept failing to parse it, but I finally figured it out I think. Taking kids away from their families and caging them is actually in these kids' best interests. Unfortunately, Trump hates immigrants as much as Democrats hate kids, and he has now given into that hate by agreeing to stop separating families which is what the Democrats want so they can kick all the kids out into the desert to die. So this is all the Democrats' fault and to the extent Trump is responsible for it it's because he's a New York Democrat.

People are such weasels about this family separation thing it's infuriating. They never have the balls to just flat out admit they are okay with these kids being separated like this. Every response is just misdirection- Oh the photos are old, oh its no worse than when people break the law in the US, oh nobody cares when Democrats did it, oh the parents are to blame for putting their kids in this situation, etc.

He shared a big ol' thing about how separating families is "the only option" because the only other choices are to imprison the kids with the parents "which is illegal and would go over like a lead balloon"or just let everyone wander over the border with no repercussion He was COMPLETELY oblivious to the fact (probably willfully so) that locking up the children WITHOUT their parents is what's happening RIGHT NOW. If we're gonna toss people in prisons for walking over imaginary lines...we could at least keep the families together. The conversation went downhill fast, and I'm really kinda bent out of shape about it because it was someone I used to think was a nice guy but turns out he's a Nazi.

It's eternally frustrating that the administration can demonstrably lie on a daily basis, but when something negative about them turns out to be wrong we're right back to "both sides are the same."

So, some chud vs never-trump drama from a blog I follow: Chud: When the time comes I will deal with them as humanely as I did with their comrades in Vietnam. (Referring to liberals and their desire to destroy the country) Never-Trump 1: [Chud] was in Vietnam the way I was on Nabuu with Anakin Skywalker. The closest he got was a Bob Lee Swagger novel. Chud: I did three tours in Vietnam from 1969-1971 with the 82nd Airborne. I was engaged in 13 battles and 22 firefights , was wounded twice receiving two Purple Hearts (once shot and once hit with mortar shrapnel which I still carry in my right kidney) and was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor in action around Dong Hoi. Oh, and I killed more commies than you have fingers and toes, confirmed. So keep your smart assed comments about my service to yourself you ungrateful slob. (this is not the first time Chud has made this claim. He's also claimed to have 82 sniper kills) *At this point Never-Trump 2 (who frequently has insults thrown at him by Chud) decides to do some research* Never-Trump 2: This site, which is a respected military affairs resource, says: With the Tet Offensive in Vietnam during February 1968, additional US troops were needed in a hurry. On 14 February 1968, the 3rd Brigade deployed to Vietnam in Operation All American. The Brigade arrived at Chu Lai and moved north to Phu Bai near Hue. In March 1968, the 3rd Brigade troopers fought alongside the 101st Airborne in Operation Carentan I. The Brigade conducted combat operations for 22 months, fighting along Highway 1, the Song Bo River, Hue, and Saigon. In September 1969, the Brigade conducted its last combat operation in Vietnam, Operation Yorktown Victor, in the so-called iron triangle. The 3rd Brigade returned to Fort Bragg and the 82nd Airborne on 12 December 1969. This agrees with several other sites I found, including several created by 82nd AB veterans. The 3rd Brigade of the 82nd Airborne was deployed in response to the Tet Offensive, in January 1968, and withdrawn in December 1969, after 22 months of service. In particular, all of the sources I’ve found (a dozen or so) indicate that the 82nd did not serve in Vietnam during 1970 or 1971. During most of the Vietnam war, the 82nd was held in reserve to deal with any other crises that might arise around the world. According to the same site: During the 1970s, the 82nd Airborne was alerted several times and Division units deployed to the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Greece for exercises in potential future battlegrounds. An antitank task force armed with the new TOW missile deployed to Vietnam in the spring of 1972. You also wrote: and was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor in action around Dong Hoi. Dong Hoi was in North Vietnam, roughly 50 miles north of the border with the South, as this map shows, and there is no record of the 82nd Airborne (or any other major US combat unit) ever engaging in ground combat that far into North Vietnam – at Dong Hoi or anywhere else. (There was a naval battle off the coast of Dong Hoi, but it seems doubtful that the 82nd Airborne would have been involved, and in any case the naval battle happened in 1972). Chud: I took enough fresh lip and insults from people like you when I got back to Philly. Now you’re going to insult me and my service with “Google” 45 years later. Give me a break. Over the last several months I have been getting more and more disgusted with the snarky anti American attitude I detect with some of you guys at this blog. I even tried a month off just to see if I may be over reacting. I wasn’t. You have gone so far left just disagreeing isn’t enough now you don the usual leftist cloak of personal attacks and insults. Well, you can keep it. I’ve been commenting here foe a couple years now but suddenly I’m being attacked. I don’t need it. I’m not trying to impress you but I won’t have my honor, my service and my country demeaned and slandered by people who haven’t served and who only insult those who have. I’m done here.
