There’s the Hubble’s initial problems. It was fixed, but for a while you had blurry images because it was 2.2 micrometers too flat.

I reckon that's how I would tackle it. Block the digital nerves of the finger with an anaesthetic injection, take the nail off with a pair of dissecting scissors. depending on things i might push the barb to cut it off and pull it back through, give it a thorough clean, if its a big laceration through the nail bed, repair it with a suture and then put the nail back on just to splint the nail bed, dress it. The nail grows back given enough time, just gotta make sure the nail bed is healed nicely so it doesn't grow funny.

Here's a longform about how Royal Dutch Shell wrecked a very expensive drilling rig, which they had spent almost $300 million upgrading, because they didn't want to pay around $6 million dollars on state property taxes for the rig. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/04/magazine/the-wreck-of-the-kulluk.html

Sea salvage always fascinates me, so many dumb decisions and near misses at any stage, you've got to think that's not unusual and almost every ship out there is harbouring ( ) a dozen potential disasters.

Memento posted:"I really don't want to get my shoes and pants wet, also I'm in Russia" I worked in a summer maintenance position through college from '94-'98 at the "Green Silver" (name changed, but Midwesterns should know what it is) tomato company. We basically painted everything that the acid from the tomatoes ate off the year before and we spent lots of time on pallets 10' -12' in the air painting stuff. One Saturday which was a "maintenance-only" day where they were trying to catch up on tasks, I was up on a pallet and when the kid driving the forklift dropped me down for lunch time, the forks hit a large conduit and killed power to part of the plant. We moved the forklift and played dumb, but he finally admitted he hit it and they were pissed....but we kept on driving forklifts the next Monday like nothing happened. Speaking of driving without licenses, the first week in '94, one of the guys was instructed to move a dumpster and did a few thousand dollars worth of damage to a guy's new S10 that still had paper plates. He drug the dumpster down the door, cab and smashed the passenger bedside. Another guy and I decided to have a race around the facility while there was a plant meeting. The laps included a 300' stretch of gravel where my old beat up Toyota forklift struggled and his Clark with bigger wheels came up behind, jammed the forks underneath, and lifted/dropped the rear of mine while moving. I could write a book on OSHA violations those 5 summers.
