Also loads of pulses are grown here in Australia and we still have a dairy industry, so even if a large portion of Australia opted for the vegetarian alternative it's not like they'd be moving to imported foods. Of course, that would be lost on the Nats.

But, no, they just want to set up an ideological argument, an excuse to write garbled feminist polemics about sexual violence, because of “disrespect for women”. Ordinary, non-polemic-writing women know that all men are not vicious rapists — “perpetrators”, to use the language of militant feminism. They know there are maniacs among us. But what of the notion that all men may not be rapists but rape starts as a lack of respect, as claimed by Malcolm Turnbull during an emotional speech in parliament? He called Dixon’s death “heartbreaking”, and it was. He then went on to elucidate on the need to inculcate respect for women in men and boys: “Disrespect of women … that’s where all violence against women begins, and so ensuring that we start from the very start, ensuring that our sons and grandsons respect the women in their lives, is vitally important.” Well, yes, and as the mother of six sons, I don’t think the Prime Minister needs to tell me that. Respect comes from a deeply inculcated sense of the worth of each human being. But it was not the first time he had used that word heartbreaking that day. He had used it when he talked about the rape of a two-year-old Aboriginal girl in Tennant Creek. Yes, that was heartbreaking all right. But we didn’t hear much about the rampant lack of respect for women or children or anyone in what can be horrible hell holes in central Australia where some of our most abused live. Instead, we heard that governments have failed, families have failed, and of course there was the usual nod paid to cultural authority. Institutional and academic feminists have succeeded in their quest for eternal victimhood with the domestic violence agenda, carefully looking away from where domestic violence actually occurs: in Aboriginal and Islander communities, where it is in plague proportions, with more rapes and assaults on women and children than anywhere in Australia. They dare not mention that because it crosses the cultural divide. We aren’t supposed to talk about “them”. They live in another world, some sort of mythological and idealised sacred land. So the feminist ideologues seize on the perfectly sensible remarks of a policeman for their own self-righteous satisfaction, and politicians looking to their own patch of middle Australia castigate us with oratorical flourishes about disrespect for women. But there is more to this than cries of misogyny. Unlike the militant feminists, I don’t see the rape of a little girl or the rape and murder of a young woman as a man-woman issue. There is a lot more than misogyny in these events. It is a human issue. There is something to be said about the deepening lack of respect for human physical integrity that is becoming pervasive, particularly among the young, through pornography and the use of drugs. Sexual violence is a symptom of a debased culture that endorses the casual acceptance of sexual licence, where giggling gaggles of suburban ladies organise champagne parties to see a film about sadomasochism. The acceptance of deviant behaviour has permeated the culture from the salubrious suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne to the Aboriginal ghettos of central Australia where, through drugs and alcoholism, the people are much more susceptible to be perpetrators and victims of sexual violence. Sexual violence is a symptom and cause of sexual abuse. When children are exposed to these horrors it leads to a lifetime of warped relationships. Human beings cannot look at other human beings as fully formed people, they are just objects for gratification. Consequently, even in our clever developed world, the desensitisation to pornography leads to another heartbreak, the heartbreaking disengagement of sex from love. Sometimes the truth can come from quite unexpected places — even from feminists. I have heard only one feminist make much sense about the effect of pornography on love and the individual. She was not popular, even with feminists — especially the new “porn is OK” types who thought she was old-fashioned and her anti-porn stance was anti-freedom. Ironically, she seemed to be a strident man-hater, bold, tough and physically unattractive, her polemics were all shaped in the man versus woman dichotomy. She put the blame for rape squarely on men. But she understood only too well the fundamental damage to bodily integrity that comes from prostitution and pornography. She, unlike her attractive bourgeois contemporaries who enjoyed spouting feminist theory, really understood there was no heart in pornography and its ally, prostitution. She understood it because she had been damaged by prostitution herself. Her name was Andrea Dworkin, and her memoir is Heartbreak.

I tried doing meatless Mondays for a while but the timing never worked for me (husband worked late and a lot of the recipes were kinda involved), so instead I do mostly vegetarian lunches throughout the week. People don't need as much meat as they think and also don't realise they need vitamin C to absorb iron, which is easily available in beans and other vegetables (and fruit).

I usually use 1/2 cup of rice, 1/2 cup of beans, 1/4 cup salsa and however much cheese I feel like, but I ain't the boss of you, do whatever you like. Cheap, tasty, can buy all the ingredients already packaged, takes very little time to prepare.
