to be fair part of that was also the loving oppressive moderation era of SA ending. i registered during a time when, particularly in Games, where you had to post constantly thinking of what was going to happen when someone flamed and reported you 10 minutes after you posted anything. triple-thinking yourself constantly will make you a stilted and awkward poster at best. being able to just post something and it being acceptable to roll your eyes when someone comes in and tortures your post into some poo poo you didn't say is still a relatively new state of affairs for my tenure here.

First of all, I would like to say I am glad that opening the forums in China means I get a Chinese version of the captcha before I load the page. Last time I was here, it was a Google-only captcha, and I couldn't get on here without a VPN on. Now I can do it locally, and Imgur also doesn't require a VPN so I get a mostly-fine forums experience without Express VPN constantly dropping my connection. Express is alright, but about every hour it drops and I have to reconnect. On my phone, the app is somehow much slower on WiFi than on data while also burning my battery life at an alarming rate. Being like 1km from the HK border now, I randomly get notifications from blocked apps, but when I open them I can't get enough signal to get them to load.

I did and didn't. I was just super angry by the end of my last stay. I meant to stay like 6 months and ended up staying about 14 or something. I had no break from China at all for that long period, and my stupidity of using these forums as a whining zone while also reading the super-paranoid r/china turned me into a bitch-made person that felt like the world was out to get him and I needed to vent stupid useless poo poo. It's really easy to fall into that mindset when that's like half your source of communication with the outside world. It's toxic. Add on the Trump news about his idiocy and the whole world seemingly burning down, and I was in a weird mode of constant negativity. When everything is a "crack down" against your kind, while the world is in shambles, every little inadvertent thing seems like a personal slight.

About two months ago or so, I stopped checking on social media and I used a browser extension to block a lot of news sites and widgets. I stopped reading reddit except for some DIY subs that I learn from. I stopped opening these forums every day. I have very little idea what is going on in the world, and it's perfect.
It worked great to lift me out of the bombardment of retarded news and the media machine. I think it's been the best thing I've done online since pirating. I've freed up so much time and, outside of youtube, I rarely know what to do online anymore. Reddit, social media, and the forums were brainless automatic source of clicks, and I broke that bad habit I developed over the years of online use. I've been reading ebooks every night, sleeping earlier, and so on, because the typical social aspect of opinion mongering and replying and blabbing is all gone. I just see China and face culture as what it is, and my motto is already just "Well, this is China, what do you expect?" instead of the previous "OH. MY. GOD. HOW DARE THEY... REEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
It's cool. I recommend everyone to try it for a couple weeks.

Im in greece right now, and I have to say, the Chinese tourists are actually extremely well behaved. The only obnoxious thing about them is the size of their groups, and everyone needs a solo photo with every monument then they have to take groip pics where everyone has a turn on the camera (and turn down people offering help)

I'm pretty surprised that most of the Chinese your groups in Barcelona this year have been pretty relaxed and not obnoxious, at least when they're not after a picture of something famous. Last year, I saw some mainland tourists picking up the stuffed animals and toys that people put on the Ramblas as part of the post-terrorist attack memorials and I lost my poo poo.

It's weird, but they're still always in Decathlon. It's the exact same stuff and it's no cheaper. :iiam:

I went through Kuala Lumpur airport again, and mainland travelers were obnoxious as always, harking, spitting, and blasting their lovely dramas at full volume in the terminal.

I wonder how moving home will be. When I left six years ago, my home country was not very popular with Chinese tourists. Recently it's become very popular. Wild nature, quietness and clean environment have always been selling points, so I hope it still is. Although there were some news articles about the large increase in tourists (Chinese weren't mentioned specifically) is already putting a strain on the nature in certain places.

Edit: In the winter there was also an article about how Asian (again Chinese not specified) tourist drivers can't handle winter conditions, crashing cars and being a nuance to the locals. The local police wanted them off the roads, but a govt spokesperson shrugged it off saying something like "we have to allow them as long as they have international drivers licenses", yeah, since it's soooo easy for foreigners to drive in China, right?

This reminds me of some issues with the opposite situation in northern Japan, where there’s a number of US military facilities, which would inevitably get staffed with a lot of people from the southern US, who combined inexperience with driving outside of the US and on the left hand side, with having no idea how to drive in the snow, leading to a fair number of problems for the local government.

I will try to summarise below as best as I can. It is really complicated, and everyone tells me "not to worry".

I get paid ca. 5K RMB as fixed salary on the 5th-6th every month.

Around the 25th they pay me another instalment which is highly variable, typically within 1.5K-4.2k RMB. (Tends to be higher before long holidays).

After one year I got ca. 90K RMB, irregularly paid out of the contract's 120K.

Only after aggressively complaining, hinting a lawsuit, I received 100K out of the promised extra2x60K. (divided in 3 irregular transfers, made by some 18-y-old undergrad, late at night)

My last stint in Korea I found out that they had not been paying into the retirement fund/social security, and they were also trying to not pay me my end of contract bonus. My friend is a Barrister in England who teaches at a Korean university, and he had one of his Korean lawyer coworkers write a quick letter. I guess there was some sort of mix up because it was mailed twice, with a 4 day gap in between. In that time the school paid both my social security (which I then withdrew) and my end of contract bonus. When the letter arrived again, someone at the shady school messed up and paid me my end of contract bonus for a second time. This was within the same 3 months that Sears Travel forgot to bill me for my flight home to Canada, and the Bank of China messed up a money transfer and refunded me 2000RMB that they never actually withdrew.

I told everyone who would listen that the owner was about the do a runner, and 6 months later he took every cent he owned to run the Korean-only golf course he and a friend started in New Zealand.

Update from NYT, but no surprises!

quote:

In a High-Stakes Environmental Whodunit, Many Clues Point to China
XINGFU, China — Last month, scientists disclosed a global pollution mystery: a surprise rise in emissions of an outlawed industrial gas that destroys the atmosphere’s protective ozone layer.

[...]

Now, a trail of clues leads to this scrappy industrial boomtown in rural China.

Interviews, documents and advertisements collected by The New York Times and independent investigators indicate that a major source — possibly the overwhelming one — is factories in China that have ignored a global ban and kept making or using the chemical, CFC-11, mostly to produce foam insulation for refrigerators and buildings.

“You had a choice: Choose the cheaper foam agent that’s not so good for the environment, or the expensive one that’s better for the environment,” said Zhang Wenbo, owner of a refrigerator factory here in Xingfu, in Shandong Province, where he and many other small-scale manufacturers said that until recently, they had used CFC-11 widely to make foam insulation.

"Of course, we chose the cheaper foam agent,” Mr. Zhang said during an interview in his office. “That’s how we survived.”

As it happens, a crackdown was underway in the town and moments later, four officials entered Mr. Zhang’s factory, handed him a leaflet warning against a range of environmental violations, including using CFC-11, and ordered his factory closed.

“They never told us until last year that it was damaging the atmosphere,” Mr. Zhang said. “Nobody came to check what we were using, so we thought it was O.K.”

[...]

But the study’s authors said that such a large tide of emissions — on the order of 13,000 metric tons a year — could be explained only by new, illegal production, and said the source was probably in East Asia. Evidence suggests that an important focus may be small foam makers and their chemical suppliers in China, where regulators have long had a tough time bringing polluters to heel.

Chinese traders and experts candidly described how small, primitive chemical plants have kept making CFC-11 in spite of the ban, and their accounts are backed by government documents.

[...]

But paradoxically, underground demand for CFC-11 may have been partly spurred by China’s increasingly strict environmental standards. The government has demanded better insulation of buildings so they waste less energy, and that means more foam.

At the same time, the government has tightened supplies of the main legal foam-making agent used in China, HCFC-141b, which is less harmful to the ozone layer. That chemical is scheduled to be phased out in China’s polyurethane foam sector by the end of 2025, to be replaced by even safer alternatives.

But Ms. Shao, the environment official, said that the surging price of HCFC-141b had encouraged some foam makers to fall back on black-market CFC-11 instead of embracing unfamiliar, next-generation alternatives.
