Because they generally don't have much in their lives and lack control over things in real life, so they try to exert power over stupid internet poo poo to give them some sense of control in their lives. Normal people do not hold internet grudges and try to take down other people. They just move on with their lives. Weirdos with nothing much to live for take up a crusade and try to be Internet Powerful to make up for their garbage real lives. Whee!

For some people, hurting others in anonymity is the only power they have in life, the only thing they can control and get away with. In the real world, they may feel trapped and under-appreciated, but online they are a completely different person, a badass who gives no shits and tells it like it is.
For some, trolling is just entertainment, a way to pass time and make friends laugh.
You can't really tell the difference on the receiving end though.
