True. With the Bellevue housing market prices increasing over 16% last year they should hold onto the house as long as possible. But considering he started retirement planning in his late 60s by writing to a newspaper...

It takes one google search to find a general article on Vanderbilt subsiding their costs:

https://admissions.vanderbilt.edu/vandybloggers/2010/08/need-based-financial-aid-at-vanderbilt/

My wife went to Vanderbilt for her undergrad, and essentially Vanderbilt paid most of her costs. Her family def isn’t rich, hence why she qualified, but they definitely are also not poverty level by any means.

So either A. This person doesn’t research at all, or B. This person comes from a very well to do family and will be fine.

She almost certainly started the day she turned 62. Assuming she was born sometime in the 50s that would turn a $1k full benefit in to around $710-50 a month.

I found this "job posting" for Yellow Express which makes it seem like yes you need to finance a van with them. Weirdly it's a link to olderworkers.com.au which specifies they are looking for "Mature age courier drivers".
https://olderworkers.com.au/jobs/sub-contract-courier-drivers/

quote:

Job Description
“Be Your Own Boss!” BUY-A-JOB!”
Established in 1926, Yellow Express Couriers is seeking to recruit mature age courier drivers (50+) to service it’s ever growing list of Sydney based clients. Our DSO (Delivery Service Operator) or ‘Courier Program’ will reward drivers with a 3 x 3 year employment contract and a guaranteed minimum weekly income – ($1,100 p/wk base minimum). Drivers can expect to earn between $70-$90k per annum (working Mon-Fri). Each sub-contractor will require the purchase of vehicle (Renault Master MWB van) of which we will help you to facilitate it’s purchase. If you’re sick of working for someone else and “want to be your own boss”, then BUY-A-JOB and join the team here at Yellow Express.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please note, as you will require finance to purchase the vehicle/Driver Package you will need to be either an Australian Citizen or a Permanent Resident. You will also need a good ‘Credit History’.

They claim to guarantee an income of $1100 a week which doesn't sound horrible.

I like this review from indeed.com:

Management were flexible,efficient and supportive.
Co-workers were helpful and loyal to the company.
The hardest part of the job was meeting deadlines without incurring speeding fines when under extreme pressure.
The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting people and the sense of accomplishment when a successful delivery or pickup brough a particularly good result for the client.

Yeah, the income is guaranteed, and so are the expenses. Take two guesses if by default the latter are greater than the former.

Lots of lovely franchises like this. Even better known stuff like Snap on Tools, for example - those vans/etc. that drive around to all the mechanic shops in the area and sell tools on site? Someone bought the right to that specific route and client base. And have a minimum amount of tools they have to buy to carry in inventory, including whatever tools Snap feels like pushing whether they sell well or not. And gas, maintenance/etc. on the truck. Oh, and they usually lease that broken-rear end thing too, from the company.

You can do well if you luck in to a good route and seriously hustle, every single day, but you can also easily learn the hard way what buying a job means vs. owning a business. Had a friend who did Snap On, he was BWM to begin with and that made it a whole lot worse.

Yeah, this. It's not comforting when your kids' emergency contact expects directions like "Turn left at the old Jackson farm, go straight until the McDonald's with the new-style building, then turn left and keep heading that way until you see a big oak tree." It's not just a preference thing--she insists that Google Maps provides incorrect directions, and she recently refused to use Lyft because she was shocked at how much the estimated fare was. She was trying to get to the train station, and managed to select a train station in the next state over.

Seriously, I'm worried about this 'buy a delivery job" sort of thing becoming yet another predatory scheme taking advantage of elderly folks. "I just have to pay a few thousand dollars, then it's a leisurely drive around town for modest wages!" :(

Just found out my 28 year old american girlfriend has $230,000 USD in student debt
I'm gobsmacked. That systems in the US exist that allow this and how she could be so careless to borrow from any high interest lender.

I'm now looking into ways to advice her in managing this debt but atm the interest avg of her loans is 8.3% and she only just started to work and earns $60,000 AUD salary. The added challenge of managing this debt is she wants to stay in australia.

Will The Australian government tax offset the interest of these?

So far my advice is consolidate and refinance the loan, seek forgiveness programs and pay the minimum repayment until forgiveness payout is achieved I think after 20 years.

Really makes my Australian help loan of $3000 at inflation rates seems so much more manageable

someone did the math:

quote:

Have you done the scary maths on this?

$60,000 AUD salary is actually ~$47,750 AUD after tax

$230,000 USD debt @ 8.3% is ~$19,000 USD per year or ~$25,500 AUD per year in interest payments at current exchange rate

Salary ($47,750) minus interest payments ($25,500) leaves $22,250 AUD in her pocket
I personally pay 18k/year in rent and that's considered cheap.

My Cousin (29M) Added His Girlfriend (25F) Of 4 Months To His Current, Savings and Credit Card Accounts....[new]

My cousin has asked me to keep a secret for him which I don't think I can. He is 29 year old guy who earns about $150k a year finance, he is an only child and his dad died when he was 1 so it's just been him and his mom. He doesn't have many friends. I am 30M.

A few months ago we all went to a house party and there was a beautiful girl there. Since that night she's all he has spoken about. He was hooked. We'd never seen him like that. A few weeks in he complained that she never pays for anything. But eventually he just accepted it. I do not know WHAT this girl did. He said the sex was good and i don't think he has had a girl as fine as her before but he was CLEARLY in love/lust with her. He is sure this is his one true love, this is it for him. He said apparently she was the best sex, best everything. She told him she's madly in love with him.

This all happened in 4 months

WELL

WELL

WELL

Today he was speaking to me and told me not to judge him but as a sign of his 'commitment' to her he added her on to:

His bank account (to make it joint) where his wages go every month (so that's now joint and no she's not adding anything to it)

As an additional holder on his credit card account

HE MADE HIS SAVINGS ACCOUNT JOINT!!!! WHICH HAS HIS 200K SAVINGS FROM THE PROCEED OF HIS RECENT HOUSE SALE AND INHERITANCE. HIS LIFE SAVINGS.

I said did he ask or tell anyone before doing this. He said no, he really cares for her and he wanted to show her he was committed and she suggested a joint account. So he added her to all 3 as all are held by the same bank.

Apparently they went in together yesterday and signed a heap of forms. For the bank accounts it became joint for the credit card it's an 'additional holder.

He said he will marry her anyway and trusts her so why not and if she needs to buy anything she will have his cards.

It's been 4 months....

I did ask why also the savings.

He said 'oh i just thought i'd do all of them'.

EVEN WORSE. HE HAS TOLD ME NOT TO TELL ANY OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS BECAUSE HE KNOWS HIS MOTHER 'WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND'.

I don't think I can keep this to myself as this seems like it's just such bad, bad, bad news. He would have never done such. I do not know how this girl has convinced him to do this. He had 3 girlfriends before this. I do not get why he is doing this so soon for this new girl.

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS?!?!

SURELY IF SHE'S JOINT ON THE ACCOUNT SHE CAN RUN OFF WITH HIS MONEY.

What can I do? Or do I just keep this all secret and say nothing? It doesn't fell right. I want to tell our family but I don't want to betray him. This just all feels wrong.

TLDR: Cousin wants me to keep financial details of new relationship secret from family. I do not think I can. I believe this situation is a danger. I do not want to invade his privacy but I want to tell our family and betray his trust.

AreWeDrunkYet

$230k of student loans sounds like an amount you may want to consider emigrating over. They can't realistically go after her in Australia, and as long as we don't bring back debtors prisons she should be able to visit. But probably forget about US residency for a while.
