Was the death of the Advent Calendar threads also a consequence of GBS 2.0, or just regular GBS goons finding that bizarre walled garden and going nuts? I don't remember that very well besides "series of Advent Calendar threads runs every December for years, develops bizarre regular-poster subculture who all post their injokes in a deranged pseudo-Victorian-urchin cant, goons from outside the thread notice and all Hell breaks loose, also the OP is hosting thread images on the Deviantart account of his furry commission artist wife I think?"

Yeah, it was either furry porn or elf torture. I mix those two events up.

That was GBS 2.0 as well. And his wife drew furry smut involving anthropomorphic cats leaning purposefully on pickup trucks. EDIT: Here's the original thread. The thread that came after the original was locked is good too. Vincent Van Goatse has a new favorite as of 05:53 on Jun 28, 2018 |

I think that was actually Axemaniac unless I’m severely misremembering hellbastards stuff. His was like flying skulls and Lazers and poo poo and being extremely up his own rear end Although rape jokes were pretty much prime GBS around that time so it’s possible

I do kind of miss that poo poo though. "MSPaint your job!" or "Weirdos you grew up with!" Were the kind of GBS topics I lurked before joining and I always enjoyed the stories. Even if a lot of them were outright fake, if not extremely exaggerated. Some of the older GBS stars could tell some fun stories about their wacky (and probably fictional) teenage jobs and such. Though there was always the gradual decline from "here's a story where I got into a lot of poo poo" to "And here's another great story where I fought off ten gangsters AND every woman wanted to gently caress me!"

I think we went over the Advent Calender stuff back at the start of the thread someplace, but in short: There were two different people who made Advent Calender threads, the first one is Bulmer, who says things like 'oh gosh' and is disturbingly normal and makes silly songs about things and lives in Manchester. The second is TheGlavwen, a welshman, whose wife draws furry porn that looks like its purpose was to make airbrushed van-art look like a Rembrandt masterpiece. The latters advent calendar thread had a very short life before someone looked closer at the images and realised they were hosted on the op's own hosting and went looking around and found all the furry porn. No, I don't have any links because I can't be arsed to look through archives. Edit: speaking of weird fucks who've showed up here, who was it that got found having photoshopped pictures of kids to transformation porn? I only have a memory of one picture where they crudely photoshopped a snout on some poor kid. Keru has a new favorite as of 07:39 on Jun 28, 2018 |

Microbe was pretty cool, I remember lurking to read that when I was a baby college student. SA wasn’t blocked by my hyperconservative Christian college internet proxy, for the simple reason that it censored cuss words. Like you could be crawling the worst poo poo in GBS but East Texas Baptist University figured it was all cool, what the gently caress. Then I realized I was an adult now and could drop my tenbux for access without having to get a parent’s permission. About a month later SA was blocked for cussin’. I ruined everything and never figured out how Microbe ended. Anyway that’s my story

Yeah, I agree with you- you need to read them in order to get all the "jokes," and I can see how it would be totally unfunny or just weird to some. I'm an EFL teacher and my brain is hardwired to seek out hosed-up sentences and scour them for meaning, so for me it was an easy read. The weird writing style/word choice/syntax was fun.

As I recall Microbe never ended, but the creator stopped making posts about it. I want to say possibly there was an offer to make a game or other media that never surfaced but it's been years so I'm unsure.

Odd trend i'm noticing is that wrt content creation, it tends to go wrong or become tiresome because it gets tangled up in meta/injoke bullshit rather than continuing as is. Like an advent calendar/quirky christmas thread is a fine concept in and of itself, but it somehow managed to devolve into some kind of entire language of bizarre encoded buzzwords that were completely impenetrable to outsiders. Microbe was good until it flew up its own rear end trying to milk every post for the maximum amount of attention possible. There was that one "life choices DOS game" that was good, but kept getting marred and derailed by arguments because people wanted to act like coy dipshits about mocking anyone who asked if it was a real game, and getting mad at anyone who explained that no, it was just made up. Things end up leaning too much into cliques and injokes and gradually become exclusive/inaccessible rather than trying to stay on a level that anyone can jump into at any point. I think Dropsy and R/Y/B managed to avoid the problem by just being their own thing throughout for the most part. In short, imo goons taking a good thing and ruthlessly running it into the ground is the problem - same as it ever was.
