Did you hear that owls are the only bird that can see the color blue? Total bullshit made up in Aunt Debbie's email forwards. How the gently caress would birds such as this handsome fella get mates otherwise? Almost all birds can see blue, better than we do.

But my boss does a daily fact of the day in her morning emails, and yesterday she posted that only owls can see blue. It's apparently a common myth.

Further proof that birds can see blue, these fellows. My favorite backyard bird since I was a kid.

There are a few Blue Jays that have taken up residence in my backyard and they are some of the noisiest bastards. I thought Mockingbirds claiming their territory or looking for a mate was bad, these Blue Jays have taken it to the next level of loud.

If they're screaming, that's their flock alert sound - one of them probably spotted a hawk or cat or something. They can actually be quite musical when they're so inclined. I'll still take them over that loving wren. ter-WEEET ter-WEEET ter-WEEET over and over again, starting at about 5 AM outside my bedroom window.

a durn pigeon can see a smidge into the ultraviolet rays So the by our sight grey males actually look super fab to the pigeon ladies.

I know at least some parrots can too. Shine a uv light on a budgie's wings and there are all kinds of patterns our dumb human eyes don't naturally see.

Master Twig posted:Yep. But my boss does a daily fact of the day in her morning emails, and yesterday she posted that only owls can see blue. It's apparently a common myth. The reason is that birds have 4-5 different cone cells and pigments in their eyes, whereas humans have only 3. The fourth pigment is typically ultraviolet, meaning they see more distinct colors in ranges humans can’t. Rare mutations can give humans a fourth pigment, but the lens of the eye blocks UV light, so a working pigment would only allow for more mixtures of colors in the visible spectrum.

Blue Jays also scream when they are saying,"Bitch! Bring out the cat food!" Or, "Cat! Get away from that cat food it is mine!" In my experience. One flapped down beside one of my strays while she was trying to eat and started screaming in her ear after screaming at her from a perch on the bench for a few minutes didn't have any effect. She looked at it like,"What the gently caress?!" then slinked off.

This morning when I was out walking the dog, I saw a parent rook with two big chicks following them around demanding very loudly to be fed. All of a sudden, the parent just... cracked or something; they just started screaming and jumping up and down with their wings half out, right in the baby's faces for about 5 seconds and then stopped just as suddenly and walked away. The chicks just stood there completely silently for a little while, then walked after the parent without making a single sound. For reference: A Rook
