Molly shows up in this collection of short stories called 'Bombshells' which is focused on female leads. I swear every other page has her playing 'WWHDD?'

Molly playing "WWHDD" feels extremely in character to me, so I don't see the problem. "The Rack" was the one thing sexistish thing in Dresden that made me cringe without it being pointed out to me, so yeah, pretty bad.

This UF book, The Night Dahlia (it's the second in a series) by R.S. Belcher is just so cringeworthy. I'm pretty certain there's not a live female character in this book who the main character doesn't have a sexual history with, and the plot revolves around the protagonist being hired to track down an elf mob boss's daughter who went missing and, it and surprise surprise (spoilers, but who the gently caress cares) became a porn star. Said protagonist's tragic backstory also involves being ejected from the Magic Police after a case involving raped and murdered young women goes sour. The crazy thing is that I'm pretty sure this author's Weird West series (Shotgun Arcana), while being incredibly dark in tone, wasn't this sleazy.

Belcher is uneven, at best when it comes to his writing. Shotgun Arcana and Brotherhood of the Wheel were both enjoyable, one in a Weird-Weird West style and the other as UF on wheels. His Nightwise series(now?) is cringeworthy. The first book the protagonist is iirc looking at a crime scene/autopsy and comparing it to his BDSM relationship with his GIRLFRIEND, which gives him extra insight into the crime. I didn't bother to finish the book after that, the only reason I read Brotherhood is because Shotgun Arcana was somewhat interesting and there's been a dearth of Dresden.

The Bombshells short story has Andi, Justine, and Molly dolling up and going to a svartalf party. On the way in, they have a running joke about the mystical power of "the rack" (their boobs) riffing on the Force.

And a "Poochie" is a cringe-worthy character added in a desperate a tempt to appeal to the crowd/turn a show around, make it "X-Treme". Comes from The Simpsons episode where they added the dog Poochie to Itchy & Scratchy with the infamous sentence 'And if Poochie isn't on screen everyone should ask "Where is Poochie?"'. Also coined the "My planet needs me" and "Poochie died on the way to his home planet". Also a character who seems to unnecessary steal the limelight in a story or is referenced again and again without real purpose, just to get the name in.

At least in Aftermath Murphy behaved like herself and not a walking embodiment of the I Have Boobs (You Must Obey) trope. What the hell happened?

I mean, Murphy had to take her pants off and wriggle across the floor to get past that mine in Mavra's lair. There's the entirety of White Night. You can find examples of that crap in every book. It's definitely there.

I dived a bit into the first book of the Junkyard Druid series. I can have a fine old laugh at 'Colin McCool' but for a series that wants really hard to be progressive, the first two women we get are A) his partner a sexpot who femmes all the fatale and B) his best friend a supposedly shy fae girl with giant hooters.

I've been tearing through Verus. I can't explain why I like it so much, or even if I like it, but I feel compelled to keep reading. The stuff I liked most about Dresden was the world building and there isn't really so much of that here. Verus is a way more likeable and believable protagonist and I love that the rest of his team actually grows more competent, even if he continues to be a completely poo poo detective.

Yeah, Verus has a lot of issues but the one thing it does right, and in spades, is capturing that page-turning element that the early Dresden books had and not much else has since captured.

When is the next Rivers of London due out? I just finished up all the main books (are there short story collections like Dresden has?) last week and I'm hunting for something to read now. You all seem to like the Alex Verus series. Maybe I could give them a shot. Or possibly the 2nd Sandman Slim book. For now I've started rereading The Wheel of Time, but only until I figure out what to read instead.

I love the Verus books for when I need something to waste a day or two reading before moving on. They flow and their fun and I don't feel like I miss anything by following it just for the what-happens-next-ism

THere are a few short stories scattered across the web, some comics (Aaronovitch doesn't write all of the comics any more it seems) and a novella that is worth grabbing if you missed it. You sound like someone who should probably read Verus next, though it's popcorn fare.

Verus is a lot of fun, but one book I don't see talked about a lot here is London Falling by Paul Cornell. It's genuinely pretty dang spooky and I love his interpretation of magic. Anyone can do magic it seems, but you probably really really do not want to unless you can cheat at it. The first thirty minutes are tremendously slow as it slowly graduates from police procedural to something else, but it doesn't let up from there. All of the subsequent books have satisfactorily raised the stakes while giving away just a bit of the bigger picture. I don't want to give too much away about twists and such, but there's a scene in the second book where some characters are at an auction bidding on arcane texts with things like 'six years of unhappiness.' It's wild.

ALso I just did a search and apparently the "Shadow Police" / London Falling series has been discontinued (at least for now) due the publisher. So, no more books in that series. =(. Still three solid entries though. I don't recommend it for people because it's far closer to actual horror than most people in this thread want most of the time.
