Yeah, it turns out that how you appear to treat something actually matters. The senate refusing to even consider a SCOTUS appointment is a pretty drat serious thing, but the way the dems treated it was like it was some minor annoyance instead of actually raising hell over it. Incidentally this is why the dems keep falling flat - the GOP keeps doing poo poo that is on the level of a constitutional crisis, but the dem establishment just goes on like it's business as usual and we need bipartisanship and all the usual bullshit that's never loving worked ever. Even worse, they do it while pointing out the poo poo the GOP does and expecting people to get all mad and support them because of that, except as mentioned they still want to do business with the same people they're accusing of everything up to and including treason, which obviously makes no sense whatsoever. Hence the dems look like complete bullshitters at best and a buncha quislings at worst and it won't loving work this time either.

So they once again have only themselves and their :decorum:-addled smoothbrains to blame.

People who keep the dumb emails thing afloat are disingenuous. There are plenty of reasons to oppose Hillary Clinton beyond her email server; her email story hadn't happened yet in 2008 and there were a shitload of Obama canvassers, donors, etc in D&D working tirelessly to kill her campaign in the primaries. It's because she's an agent of a lovely system who has failed us time and time again, and eight years hadn't changed that.

Yeah the weird duality of Democratic messaging is that Republicans are terrible and you need to vote against them regardless of anything else but also we need to constantly reach across the aisle and compromise with them. It resulted in people saying simultaneously that Clinton was the only person that could gently caress over the Republicans (as she would want vengeance after decades of abuse) but also she could meet them in the middle and get Congress to effectively legislate. They want the easy path of compromise and civility when they do their jobs but then try and hijack the passion for resistance during elections. It's incredibly cynical and as 2010 through 2016 showed is not a very effective motivator.

You can blame the SCOTUS disaster on the media which is partly true but Obama took the path of least resistance throughout that entire ordeal starting with picking a boring centrist. That was a constitutional crisis that was basically shrugged through assuming you could shame Republicans or that pointing out their hypocrisy meant a drat.

Exploration is ill-advised.
As I mentioned in C-SPAM, the Republicans had been preparing for Clinton's run for 16 years minimum, and the demographic that Clinton hung her entire strategy on- 'moderate' suburban white conservatives- was one that had been very specifically taught by conservative media to despise her specifically.

Even when I thought she was going to win the people saying she was the Responsible choice since only she could get cross over votes from Republicans sounded crazy. I dont think people who said that have ever met a real Republican in the flesh or were idiotic pundits that believed the Never Trumpers were a demographic that mattered. Every Republican I have ever met hates her with a passion regardless of if they are full on Trumpster or just hankering for some tax cuts.

We couldn't have nominated a more divisive candidate from the primary to the general and it wasn't even because of a radical agenda, she and her husband are just totally toxic.

I feel like this needs more nuance. "you shouldn't run because the voters won't elect you, regardless of the reason" is definitely an argument, especially when you are running for the political party whose major property is "We might get elected instead of a Republican" (third party candidates should argue that while they would prefer to get elected, getting elected isn't a significant goal of their run). "Sexism exists, so we'll just run male candidates forever instead of tackling larger societal issues" has the obvious problems, but I don't think any non-conservatives are running on a platform of "Women belong in kitchens".

Ok but Clinton did lose the election so the people predicting "You definitely won't win because sexism is so bad" were right. We should both acknowledge sexism is bad and attempt to improve society with respect to sexism, but the Democratic candidate losing the Presidency and the Republican candidate winning the Presidency does nothing for either of those goals.
edit:

Prester Jane posted:

Democratic voter apathy towards Hillary was not really all that related to the wild rear end conspiracy theories about the right embraced about Hillary.
I think this is also a good argument, it's just that if someone leads with "The reason why Clinton lost was sexism" they can't follow up with "and therefore we shouldn't care about the sexism of our voters", UNLESS they are proposing to run on a platform they think is good regardless of its popularity, which is transparently not what Clinton was doing whatsoever. Clinton either actively wanted very bad things, or had already compromised on wanting bad things to get elected, the step from there to "run politicians that will actually win" is quite small.

Democratic voter apathy towards Hillary was not really all that related to the wild rear end conspiracy theories that the right embraced about Hillary. It was more rooted in the fact that she was a quasi-corrupt technocrat with the charisma of applesauce- on top of the fact that she made no real effort to hide her disdain for actual leftist policies and tut-tutted the Millennials with the admonition that her ideas were the very best we could possibly ever hope to realistically get so we had better support her or else.

I've made this argument before and I'll make it again. Hillary Clinton was one of the most highly qualified managers the American political system ever produced- but she was not a leader. A leader is able to inspire a group of people to cooperate together because they believe in a common image of the future. Hate Donald Trump all you want- his followers were all talking about how awesome life would be with him as president and Hillary's followers were talking about how polished her resume was.

Hilary also deeply lacks self-awareness of how either the right or the left actually perceived her, and preferred instead to quixotically pursue Centrist voters who she viewed as being the most amenable to her pro-corporate policies.

And that's before we even get into the gobsmacking hubris of constructing your battle plan around the idea that you had already won.
