I hate to say this, but I've always though that Ellison is one of the figures that people were projecting a lot onto. It's possible in this case that he just didn't think hard about the United States of Care stuff and somehow didn't realize it's obviously intended to derail single-payer, but that's pretty bad in its own way (since someone so easily derailed is likely to also be derailed in an attempt to actually implement single-payer).

quote:

Michelle, the Millennial Socialists can come whenever they want, but no one should forget actual history: We are where we are today because 130,000+ Progressives in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin in Nov. 2016 made the effort to go to the polls, and then pulled the lever for Jill Stein - a candidate every one of those voters knew could not possibly win even their state, much less the national election.

And this came on the heels of Progressives doing the same thing in 2000 in Fla. when they threw away their votes on Ralph Nader, delivering unto the world 8 years of Dubya, and the ensuing ongoing wreckage - not the least of which were landmark SCOTUS decisions on Citizens United, McCutcheon, and Voting Rights.

GOP'ers never were, and never are, going to be persuaded by Progressives, so Progressives have to vote for someone who can win; they must quit deluding themselves they ever have the luxury of 'protest' votes in any election.

Vote wisely, vote often, make your vote count against GOP'ers.

the entire point of stuff like court packing is to shut the republicans out of power permanently (by removing all the restrictions and rigging that the republicans built into the system to grant themselves power despite holding support of a small minority of the population)

GOP court packing allowed them to do things like voter disenfranchisement and also pretty epic gerrymandering.

yes, I know, I'm saying that when the democrats retake the government they absolutely have to go on the offensive as hard as possible, because we can't ever permit the republicans to take back power again. And before someone :decorum:s at me, the republicans are a fascist nazi party now. that combined with them being incredibly overrepresented in government compared to their actual public support is an unacceptable situation that needs to be rectified immediately.

also for the past few years republicans have been threatening to pack appellate courts at the state level every time the partisan composition flips the other direction due to those being elected positions

plus having recall elections when a specific court rules against them as in the case of iowa's supreme court ruling in favor of gay marriage

people aren't suggesting it because the filibuster is gone, they're suggesting it because the Court has lost all legitimacy. neither the right nor the court itself are pretending to be anything but a partisan organ, so why should anyone else continue to participate in that delusion?

if you’ll listen to Thursday’s pod save America, featuring a discussion on Ocasio and her positive uplifting message that means nothing to Democrats as a whole; you’ll hear a discussion on court :decorum:. and how trump violated the sanctity of the court and it’s 4 conservatives, 4 liberals and a centrist wild card.

quote:

First he came for our Four Loko, and we said nothing. Then he came for our powdered alcohol. Now New York Senator Chuck Schumer is coming for our Phrosties, the clandestine alcoholic-slushy delivery service that has taken off across the five boroughs over the past few months.

“A 12-year-old can probably buy these ‘sloshies’ online, get it, and enjoy it because it’s filled with fruit juice and fruit punch and all the things that taste sweet and nice,” Schumer said at a press conference Monday. “A few weeks ago, I talked about powdered alcohol. I’m making an effort to prevent that from being sold. I would like to see the same thing happen to these ‘sloshies’” if they’re not regulated.

The remarks, coupled with the news that the New York State Liquor Authority is investigating the “unregulated and unlicensed” slushy merchants, has scared the creators of Phrostie out of business, or at least driven them deeper underground. By Tuesday, the Phrostie Instagram account had been scrubbed clean, its delivery contact details replaced by the warning “WE DO NOT DELIVER.” After that, my texts to the previously listed phone numbers went unanswered, until Wednesday night, when I got a reply from the Brooklyn delivery service saying that if I wanted any more Phrosties, I would have to order “ASAP.”

it's the entire raison d'etre of lesser-evilism. it turns the politicians anointed to represent us into blameless entities while shifting the burden of morality on voters. the most sickening thing about that whole ethos is that the morality voters are burdened with is a false, warped concept where voters who cannot stomach voting for evil that hurts the less fortunate in this country are themselves are cast as true evil, while voters who are complicit in the suffering of the less fortunate are given license to pat themselves on the back for being model citizens

Yeah, it's just a very backwards and self-serving way of looking at being an elected representative.

Also, I watched that piece from TDS again, as well as AOC's interview with Colbert, and I have to ask: what am I missing here? What about her accent is supposed to jump out at you with distinct cultural baggage? Is it because I didn't grow up here? Except neither did Trevor Noah.
