I feel like Phased Polaron ship weapons are going to go up up up. They look cool, they are thematically appropriate for JH chars, they have the far superior phaser proc, and no one will be opening Dominion lock boxes anymore.

Thoron Infused Polaron weapons will also be good, though they shoot yellow beams rather than purple. Polaron damage, a radiation dot, and readily available from delta alliance rep.

They drop from the infinity boxes, and the phaser proc doesn't replace the shittier polaron proc it replaces a mod and like all proc's it's still shittier than the [pen] you're giving up by not using crafted gear. They do look cool though so the demand may spike from virtually none to mild.

If you want cool polarons and have upgrades to burn (and hate yourself enough to get a full set), the Boldly They Rode beams are pretty great now that you can re-eng them for [dmg]x4.

Just make a disco polaron boat and put one of every type on. It's not like you will lose a hell of a lot of damage.

I was the person with phased polarons in season 5.

Maybe the only person. Also they were all tossed a long time ago.

Is there a beam type that's end-all-be-all better than the rest besides the cardassian piss beams? I have three bio... whatever the Xindi beams are and I'm planning on either grinding Rommie reps to get the disruptors that don't drain power, or saying gently caress numbers, slotting one of each type, and turning my Scimitar into a one ship Gay Wrath Parade

Basically antiproton. They changed how procs work a while back, so now you can't really rely on it happening at all and vanilla AP guns don't have a proc, they just have a natural [CrtD] mod instead.

There's not really any reason to worry about minmaxing guns though, just pick the color you want to see the most of

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

The best right now are probably those sensor-linked phasers/disruptors from a box or three back, but antiproton are still as good as before and far easier to get a full set of. Both of them have constant passive bonuses so they get to ignore all the proc nerfs Cryptic's done.

This is good advice.

Crafted antiproton (with [PEN] and your choice of DMGx3 or CritDx3) if you care about levels of minmax that don't matter for any of the content in STO or simply your favorite color of space lasers if you don't.

People are more "oooh wow" over you linking something gold in a chat window than caring about what it actually is.

The 'best' gun might well be polaron of some kind now just because of the two-piece of the latest featured episode.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Nah, that's handy but it's still basically just a turret that doubles as an omni beam, and once cryptic does the bugfix it can't be used with other set omnis so it isn't game changing there.

Does mean it's one less slot to gold if you're using both polaron cannons and beam layouts though.

This.
Polaron is definitely worth looking into if you're not already locked into an energy type, just make sure you grab the Lukari 2 piece set bonus with console if you're going down this purple path. Don't worry about finding pen mods, nobody cares about those anymore.

the "meta" right now is disruptor (sensor linked, spiral wave) or phasers (sensor-linked), they currently got the most support through various consoles and sets that AP just doesnt have
polaron is seeing some love with the latest episode too now

They won't get that much cheaper. On top of the randomness where you don't always get the exact weapon type you wanted, the -linked weapons have three different types and only sensor-linked ones are useful. So even when they're in the infinity box, you'll always need to open three times as many boxes of them as of other weapon types to get a set.

There's like three Sensor-Linked Omni beams on the exchange and they're all above 300 mil. The box didn't go away that long ago, so yeah, those guns are pricey.

I think someone else already said this (I didn't go back to check) but I think the discovery stuff hasn't hit the infinity boxes yet.

Either that's part of a new limited availability marketing strategy, a licensing issue, or has something to do with delivery of upcoming discovery content post-Gamma. I forget what season we're in so I'm just calling it Gamma.

(as you can tell I really have my finger on the beating pulse for this)

thats how it always has been, the Tzenkethi stuff from last year had been added to the Infinity box after the disco lockbox rotated out and you will get the disco stuff the next time the Infinity lockbox comes back (after the DS9 lockbox rotates out)

Omnis are another rare drop on top of everything else. I opened dozens of disco weapon boxes and only got two omnis total, neither of which were sensor-linked. Those omnis will drop in price once they hit the infinity box, but not by too much.

Early doff stuff is pretty much just throwing whatever at whatever and seeing what sticks, so you're good for that :v: Eventually you'll get to the stage where you spend half an hour trying to get that extra one percent onto the purple bar, then you'll get the full doff experience

You can go deep into the doff system, but your method is fine. At end-game, doffs are more useful for the bonuses they can give when placed on active duty, with some (usually rare or expensive) ones being literally build-defining.

Ok, now you need to find three purple security officer doffs with the chance to beam down extra escorts, then start calling security escorts until they proc and you end up with a small army of redshirts running around with you.

Then you can start looking into doffs that actually change how builds work.

PadreScout posted:

Generally you can just trash all that. Upgrading is fairly expensive (and upgrading rarity level is really expensive), so you only want to upgrade stuff that you'll be using a long time. Salvage the old stuff if you can, otherwise just recycle it. You can mostly use equipment you found to get through leveling content, and then once you can start doing reps and fleet equipment you should work on getting that. Do not worry about trying to make everything epic when you're fairly new. Buying your rep/fleet gear, then upgrading it to mk XV is what you should focus on.

That second part isn't really necessary on a tac, not for ground at least. Still super powerful in space, but for ground? A platoon of redshirts will solve every problem you could ever encounter.
