Centrelink thought I'd reported income incorrectly so sent a letter demanding I report it all again, so I went into a Centrelink office to tell them their sum was correct. No you can't hand it in at a Centrelink office, no you can't just email it to us, sorry we're having difficulty taking down your spreadsheet over the phone, no you can't sign up for the online reporting if you don't have a driver's licence or passport, you're going to have to go into a Centrelink office I hand copied a spreadsheet because I don't have a printer and took it in a couple of months ago but they haven't bothered getting back to me

The parliament needs a total top to bottom overhaul when it comes to operations. So much of the system is predicated on gentlemanly politeness that simply doesn't exist and it needs to set the benchmark for people's workplace behaviour nationally in the same way the government agencies purport to be benchmark employers when it comes to their conditions.

If I ever lost my job and was forced into unemployment and spent months upon months being squeezed through a lovely jobseeker process and then they forced my phone to flash red because I couldn't attend an appointment I think I'd turn to crime. First would be systematically robbing job seeking agencies, not starting with my own of course, with a side of arson. Then I'd branch out into some sort of organised crime, get myself some compatriots. And I wouldn't feel bad about it. I'm really glad I've got a good profession in a recession proof industry with a strong union. Why do rich people think forcing people to jump through hoops to get poverty level payments is a smart idea? I realise they think being poor is some sort of moral failure, but isn't it smarter to feed the wolves and domesticate them then let them roam free and hungry?

Yes, but the "wolves" in this case are old people who won't vote for you if you are not punishing people hard enough for being poor

I realise they think being poor is some sort of moral failure, but isn't it smarter to feed the wolves and domesticate them then let them roam free and hungry? Firstly - it gets votes. Secondly - they don't know how inadequate welfare payments actually are, and how easy it is to lose them. Thirdly - social stratification. If you are well-off, you probably only hang out with other well-off people, unless you deign to step out of your privilege bubble. It's hard to empathise with the nameless and faceless, and easier to "other" them or deny they exist. There was a rich guy in the US who made the case for pay increases and action on climate change because "they will come for you and your families, no wall is high enough". Made surprising inroads on it with wealthy people, too.

So alcoholism, unemployment and crime all tie up into a neat bow. Nobody really takes up crime and starts performing sophisticated armed robberies. My experience is that lower working class people are often the most racist and least class conscience. This doesn't apply to tradies, more people who may collect centerlink themselves or don't have a valuable trade. They harbour a great deal of rage towards Aboriginals, refugees, etc. I think part of it is a sense of shame connected to their own poverty which they then turn into hatred for others. edit: I'm mainly speaking about white men here, not other groups gucci bane fucked around with this message at 04:34 on Jul 2, 2018 |

Since leaving Newstart, “dole bludger” and its variants and any updates on the system’s punitive measures trigger the poo poo out of me. Centrelink must be a socialist psy-op because it pushed me heavily in that direction.

Because my partner is the main breadwinner in our family, we no longer qualify for any childcare subsidy. With the cost of quality childcare in the area we live, for both my children, I will now be paying $45 a day above my daily earnings (after tax) to go back to work and treat hospital patients."

Doctor Spaceman posted:The point people should be taking away is that childcare is so expensive that it can discourage people returning to work. I'm a stay at home dad and they have just cut out subsidy to nothing even though we are well below the threshold. Reason being is that for the 2 days my son has pre school I work trying to help get my wife's business off the ground while she is working full time at her paying job. Centrelink has a hard time understanding why I'm not in paid employment, even though I qualify as "unpaid employment in a family business" under their terms. So it's been back and forth with them for a few months now trying to get it resolved, we are fortunate that we could adjust our budget so that he can go those 2 days as we think the social aspect is very important for him but it's frustrating working 30 odd hours a week as well as being the full time carer, cleaner, organiser etc but it not being recognised especially as I am using this experience with the business to self educate and increase my chances of employment when he starts school. But just loving lol at this lady, just deal with it, we are on less than half of what her family earns. Just pay the loving fees lady Dimebag fucked around with this message at 05:27 on Jul 2, 2018 |
