Dragonborn; if kobolds and yuan-ti are fine, dragonborn should be as well. Maybe tritons and/or merfolk as well, if you don't mind that they're fish rather than lizards. Merfolk character stats can be found in Plane-Shift: Zendikar and P-S: Ixalan.

So I led the lizardman army against the overwhelming white ape invasion under threat of being eaten by a black dragon who had installed herself as their god and wanted to keep getting free snacks. It was great and we capped it off with a showdown with the white ape's four armed huge sized leader and his shitlord pet Death Naga at the vacant lizard throne. Got to eventually knock Goro Kong into the murky water where he was eaten by some immense eel monster. Death Naga dimension doored out with my best weapon stabbed into its side just before we could finish it off. Good night overall.

So what's the logic behind spell scrolls only being usable by characters that have the spells in their class spell list in this edition? I thought I'd give my party a few spell scrolls as part of a reward for defeating a lich, but it seems kind of pointless now.

3.x split it between divine and arcane casters, 5E is just continuing the tradition of 3.x but more.

But seriously, it's yet another case of D&D trying to be all the fantasy and ending up being none of them. Scrolls in fantasy novels are powerful one use maguffins requiring multiple wizards to craft, or extremely common maguffins the friendly neighbourhood wizard hands out to our hero before he leaves, or ancient lost maguffins that you spend an entire book trying to track down. They're one-shot items anyone can use with ease, or specialist items that require training and effort to cast, or repositories of knowledge that a Wizard uses to further his craft. D&D has spent several editions wildly swinging back and forth trying to settle on a nice generic implementation that satisfies all of the above directly contradictory requirements. Unsurprisingly, 5e settled on the one that cripples martials, buffs spellcasters, and completely fails to emulate any work of fiction that doesn't have D&D written on it.

After playing levels 1-5 and realizing that the team wizard was greedily grubbing all the scrolls, I just started dictating some were Divine and others Arcane, and they were just one-shot uses of the spells. It meant the wizard stopped insisting he squirrel all of them away for copying and everyone else got some versatility.

I stopped bothering with the "must be on your spell list" element.

I basically treat spell scrolls like apps. Anyone can use them, though they consume themselves when used. If you want to reverse engineer a spell scroll to learn a spell you can, but it will require an (Your Spell Ability)arcana check. To make the check you have to 1) know the language the scroll is written in, and 2) have the spell be in your spell list, and 3) be able to cast a spell of that level. The check is 10+the spell level of the scroll.

In terms of lore, spells of slot level 4 or high usually need to be written in a sufficiently magical language, such as draconic, giantish, celestial, abyssal, primordial, etc.

Introduced 5 people to D&D for their first time ever last night. I took them through the Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure; they only made it to the Redbrand hideout, but we had some laughs. They got into a big bar brawl at Stonehill Inn, and the Dwarf Cleric got kicked in the chest for a natural 20 that sent her barreling into the Folk Hero fighter and both of them into the bar counter. The High Elf Wizard rolled a natural 20 on a Magic Missile AND Ray of Frost, one of which popped some poor fucker's head like a grape.

The Wizard renamed himself Gorgeous Gallagher, and thus we have a new D&D group.

Just flavor all scrolls as End User Agreements. The first line is the name of the spell and it's effects, and maybe the words you have to say to activate it, in a magical script that everyone can read.

Then when you keep unrolling the scroll, it's just hundreds of pages of magical lawyerese that no one but a spellcaster nerd with a spellbook could understand; that's why it takes hours and money to transcribe into your book. Gotta hire an intern to do research and take notes.

Yeah we had a great moment a couple sessions ago in my group. The eldritch knight cast thunderwave on two direwolves that were in front of him and I mistakenly let him make an opportunity attack against one of them and he dropped it way below 0 hit points with his greatsword. We described it as him slicing through the wolf's neck as it tumbled away from him and it was pretty cool in the moment.

He did work that session, he killed two other direwolves with Green-Flame Blade, it just so happened that the secondary target had 1 or 2 hp left and so it combusted while he stabbed/burned his primary target.

I need to write up recaps of this campaign, if only so I have a record to remind myself what's been going on. I'm running Curse of Strahd and it's been fun, though the last two sessions were a little rocky There's so many plot hooks in Vallaki that my group has found it a little overwhelming. They've spent a session and a half just following plot hooks but haven't resolved any yet so it's felt like spinning wheels. They've decided both Lady Watcher and the Baron are lovely people and joked that they should kill them both and install Ismark as the Burgomeister and I honestly hope they do it.

The festival and the ensuing feast if your players haven’t finished the bones quest is a good 2-3 day timer with a bang to stop vallaki dragging on. Though both times I’ve run it my players have loved loving around there, it’s a good town and the subplots and characters are varied enough to get some good role playing out of it beforehand

The first time I ran it was amazing

Through the Wacher brothers egging on the party, they along with book club cultists posing as fed up townsfolk to the party stormed the manor, leading to a pc death at the hands of a fleeing Izek, and the burgomeister getting ejected from the top floor window. Lady Wacher took over the town and held the Monster's Ball, A monster themed fancy dress party. the adventures had collared on that something was majorly wrong with her, and attended the marque party with the rouge who posed as staff to infiltrate the house.

Highlights include the monk having a dance fight off with a vampire spawn while everyone else cheered on, crazy crab man aiding the party to test the guy in the strahd costume, Strahd secretly turning up in fancy dress (wearing a 'costume' of the barons skin and clothes he died in) lady wacher taking the bard upstairs and them having sex while both her husbands corpse lay on the bed, along with the rouge who triggered the sleep dart trap.

The climax was after the awards and toast to the adventuring party, strahd reveals himself, along with the 5 vampire spawn whose costumes now look very real. I got the major NPC's, along with the party IRL, to draw straws. a poor vallakian npc who dressed as a mermaid was the unlucky one, and went forward to claim her prize, which was all 5 spawn descending on her by strahds command, ripping her to pieces and causing instant chaos.
