Post-Lapis gym, this major tech corporation does what major tech corporations do, introduces new products like snake oil salesmen at the site of a recent terrorist action. At least it's convenient. Back in Grand Staircase, we can get to the half of the dungeon we couldn't before, that contains nothing that was particularly worth gating, by using an HM move that temporarily removes obstacles, that's different from the other HM move we have that temporarily removes obstacles, Cut. Like, hey, Lunatone! A special-based Rock that learns no special rock moves without the aid of the move relearner and is weak to Bug, Water, and Grass! This thing extends Trick Room's duration, so I like it by default. There's different rocks that cannot be smashed. Instead in yet another part of the cave, we find this guy. I like treasure! I'll do this thing! It's the DPPt minigame recreated pretty much perfectly, which includes extremely low rates on anything that's actually worth the time and effort. Except once you mine a rock, it's broken for good, meaning we have a limited opportunity to get some of this stuff. Game design! Dunsparce are extremely rare in Grand Staircase. Sadly this game gives them no vindication like an evolution or mega. What a failure of a fan project, neglecting dunsparce. This room has a weird message. It's the first of several like this. We need to get these crystals smashed, which is easy when wild Diglett and Geodude willingly comply. Unlike every other room, this one permanently breaks. And it makes a passage to the field notes! It seems odd that the attributes of the field were necessary to use to get to the information on said attributes, but at least the random encounters frequently break the crystals anyway so you can figure that part out fairly easily. Unlike, say, Arceus's signature move being included with Rock moves and a few HMs in getting random secondary types. And honestly most of this stuff, too. Messing with Aurora Veil is one of Amethyst's favorite hobbies. There's a lot of random poo poo in the caves but that's the stuff you, the audience at home, care about. Hey, I've been in there so long the weather has finally changed! The realtime weather system wasn't a myth! It's finally raining! So this Pansear is hiding out here, with a bum under a bridge. It's the first available fire-type by game progress besides a starter, and the monkeys can learn pledges to actually use their combos. This Numel's right here if it's raining... after Julia's gym. It's the second available fire-type, and it's half-ground and actually gets good level up moves. Oh uh possible spot for one of those chase a thing to sixty possible spots fifty-nine times things, I eventually do get the dogger unlike Teddiursa which is still somewhere in Peridot Ward. This rock has been bugging me since the start of the game. The random encounters past it suddenly shoot up to low 30s and include new things. There's a locked gate and some sort of terminal neither of which are usable, so I guess this is for later. I found this key in Grand Staircase. Note how it tells you basically nothing. It's not to this lady, who is still helplessly murmuring. It's the key to this, remember it? No? It was a locked fence back in the 6th update, now we can go here by getting an unnamed key in an entirely unrelated location. Three members of the scraggy gang are captured by Pangoro, and as established, Raven does nothing but watch. Slightly past that is a giant-rear end jumping puzzle. With random encounters, too! So you see the bottom of the pangoro, there? The battle triggers on this step. You can tell because this is the zoom in really far battle transition. They're another pokemon-as-trainer thing. Wild Pancham are available on this very map so no big deal there, I guess. They're level 45, but x4 Fairy weakness means they fall over in one Moonblast. It's a switch that makes a tiny audio cue. Of course, there's on on the other side too. Since she resists Fighting and Dark, I knew these Pangoro would go for Body Slam, so Other People's prepared for the paralysis chance. A lot of EXP from high level evolved Pokemon on something with another OT. It's Sweet Co., the same as Flower Boy and that Swirlix, except only the Swirlix came from a candy shop. With both switches pressed, the center opens. Yet another Pangoro is menacing yet another Scraggy. This one is level 50! Otherwise the same. The levels do mean it barely survives the first Moonblast. It doesn't survive the second. After winning, we immediately are in peril by the foes we just defeated. Then suddenly the boss Scrafty shows up and dissolves the Pangoro. All this for one Scraggy. Which doesn't really work in my Blaziken-based teams. Alas. Lotad's just sitting right here. What's with fangames and me using Ludicolo? Anyway, actual progress is here, where Fern is already doing the thing we were told to do. He informs us a little bit about Aya, the new poison-specialist. She's in Byxbysion Wasteland, which is constantly sealed off, with only a select few individuals possessing the means to open it. None of whom are Reborn League staff as far as I know. It's weird. Fern wants a battle for the info, maybe just to smack us down. He's not going to. Woah, lead Rhyhorn out of nowhere. Inthesto can defeat the Roserade with the power of his flaming farts. As in, literally fire. Shooting in jets from his rear end. He knows Flamethrower. That's the flavor of Skuntank learning Flamethrower. Samba's Giga Drains handle the ground-types. And this drat squirrel still works magic. Fern explains where he got the key. "Totally freaky. He wouldn't stop singing, either... ...What, you know him? ...Hah. I should've expected... You WOULD." So we go to the other dead-end to get access to Byxbysion Wasteland to fight the gym leader. I get distracted by more stuff I can look at with Rock Smash, though. Suffice it to say, after finding Cain, we don't get to go to Byxbysion Wasteland, and instead go back to Lapis Ward again. Sequence! TODAY'S RANDOM SHINY: Who spilled paint on the bird?

A game that gives you no reason to use either Pangoro or Scrafty is a bad game. Also, Fern is a homophobe too huh? What a charmer

Speaking of half-assed spriting, this is just weirdly inconsistent. The colour of the darker fur isn't the same, and the border between fur colours is marked by a black line on the trainer sprite but isn't on the Pokemon sprite. Presumably these were both done by Amethyst, too, so why the inconsistency?

Let me guess, the mining game is also the source of fossils like it was in DPPt. And if you don't get them in however many chances you get, you've missed them forever. Plus some future gym's Developer Approved Solution is centered around "you did pick up [insert specific fossil pokemon] 6 hours back and train it up for this right?" That feels like about the right level of terrible design decisions for this game, I think.

I was about to say well done game for sticking the mining in. Oh well, at least it didn't do anything to Dunsparce. Yet. Well, one thing I like is more pokemon doing their thing in the overworld. There's some dumb ones and some neat ones but overall its nice. Bit like detective pikachu, where you can see wilds just hanging out doin' stuff

Huh. I thought Byxbysion was some sort of mineral because most of Reborn city is named after a gem or something, but the only google search results for Byxbysion are for pokemon reborn, so I guess it is just a lovely name.

You know what is a real shame is that clearly the person making this awful angst filled trash pile on some level GETS that you could use Esentials to make a cool/fun series of battles for people who understand Pokemon strategy beyond the basic weakness/resistances that the base games essentially push on you. It's just their execution is inexcusable garbage.

So I think I actually know why Judgment does bonus damage on the crystal field because I'm an utter nerd, it's because Judgment's Japanese name can be read "Judgment Pebble". Similarly Strength is lumped in with rock-type moves because Pokemon Stadium's animation was of picking up a boulder and throwing it. Actually with the animation it was more like a rock levitated itself and flung itself at the enemy, but same difference. PMush Perfect posted:And the new Yugioh where it's part of a four card combo that lets you search your deck for Byxbysion Berserker, Byxbysion Beast, Mantle Of The Byxbysion, and Neo-Spacian Grand Mole and soft lock your opponent on turn 2. Time for Grand Mole to get banned. Again.

I think my favorite way to measure Yugioh eras is by which of Negate Attack, Megamorph, and Swords of Revealing Light are banned. Edit: Bonus points if something with "Mirror Force" in the name is there too. Edit 2: Are Trap Master and Man-Eater bug still banned?

Power creep is when you keep making things more powerful as you iterate on a game, to the point where everything that came out earlier is unable to compete, in spite of never getting nerfed. Mewtwo is from Gen 1 and still as OP as it was, thought it did admittedly get to hop on the Mega Evolution train. Mega Rayquaza is the only thing to get placed in a tier above Mewtwo, AFAIK.
