Yugoslavia had ethnic dimensions to it, and (somewhat) clear nationalities, ethnic cleansing notwithstanding. A future american civil war would be...I don't even think the troubles qualify as a good comparison. It would be utterly unique, and something that would define future conflicts similar to it, in much the same way the first american civil war did. The political dimension, the presence of the global supply chain, the technological difference, drones, the internet & media...it wouldn't look like anything that has come before.

If there's one group of civilians who are intrinsically prepared for an American civil war, it's young black and brown men who have already survived years of immiseration, random violence and government paramilitaries. Convicts don't seem to factor in these fantasies much either. Escaped prisoners were a crucial demographic in the Syrian and Iraqi civil wars. The U.S currently has several million men who are kept in a harsh, heavily regimented environment that requires billions of tax dollars just to keep a semblance of order. A civil war or breakdown in society would result in riots and breakouts all over the country, with overstretched police and military unable to stop them.
