What lead me to the article in the first place was thinking about John Ford's Cavalry trilogy and why he seemed so intent on sucking the Confederacy's cock in those movies. Rio Grande 1950 posted:At the ceremony, Trooper Tyree is given a furlough to continue his run from the law when one of the Texas marshals reappears, stealing General Sheridan's horse for the purpose. As the troops pass in review (with the regimental band playing Dixie at the General's request to please Mrs. Yorke), the movie closes. And, in a more recent series, Hell on Wheels is about "the story focused on Cullen Bohannon (Mount), a former Confederate soldier who, while working as foreman and chief engineer on the railroad, initially attempted to track down the Union soldiers who murdered his wife and young son during the American Civil War. " So this Lost Cause stuff isn't done yet. My favorite recent movie about the antebellum South is Django Unchained.

In honor of America and the fact that I found a deer tick on me yesterday, have an article about how ticks are rapidly taking over the US more quickly than ebola-infected MS-13 terrorists: https://www.wired.com/story/we-have-no-idea-how-bad-the-us-tick-problem-is/ quote:Around the world, diseases spread by ticks are on the rise. Reported cases of Lyme, the most common US tick-borne illness, have quadrupled since the 1990s. Other life-threatening infections like anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever are increasing in incidence even more quickly than Lyme. Meat allergies caused by tick bites have skyrocketed from a few dozen a decade ago to more than 5,000 in the US alone, according to experts. And new tick-borne pathogens are emerging at a troubling clip; since 2004, seven new viruses and bugs transmitted through tick bite have shown up in humans in the US. My friend's girlfriend has the meat allergy thing after getting bitten by a Lone Star tick. She's a vegan, so the meat part is kind of a moot point, but it provoked a number of other allergic reactions as well.

Assuming that idiot thought any deeper about where those Western tropes came from is really stretching it. He doesn't need to have thought about it for it to be part of what the show tells the audience. That's just how semiotics do. He lives in a society which taught him that "sexy rebel cowboy fighting against stodgy industrials" was an a-ok subject for a popular TV show. That he didn't question that is evidence of how normalized it is. But Outlaw Josey Wales, with it's confederate hero and villains literally in US army uniforms, is probably the biggest example. My dad loves that movie. RFC2324 posted:Is everyone forgetting Hateful 8? That was a civil war movie, and it definitely spent some time hating on confederates. Yeah, but it definitely did not uncritically portray loyalists as the good guys. Jackson's character is a nihilistic sadist, and trying not to spoil it, but: the loving Lincoln letter, omg. It's not a perfect movie but I still love it.

RFC2324 posted:Oh, there were no good guys in that, but it was definitely WAY more critical of the confederacy than the union. Yes, because of how many people are not as free from racism as they think they are, and how butthurt they get when this is pointed out to them. That's the "both sides" aspect, and there's obviously a sympathetic (?!) confederate in the story, but you might be right that on the whole it's harder on the traitors. I mean, you'd hope. You'd hope that'd be the default of any movies made today and set in the time, to be ever slightly more critical of the literal treasonous slavers, but here we are. I hope Tarantino becomes the new Ford and keeps pumping out westerns forever to balance them out.
