Well, I mean, he suspended Bill 175 so that's pretty outrage worthy?

One piece of OPC stupidity that got glossed over was Ford announcing he was going to create the first commemoration of soldiers who died in the Afghan War. I mean obviously it's not true, but what's interesting is how thoroughly it falls in line with the intellectual mainstream of Canadian conservatism. That fuckin Jack Granatstein desire to create a nationalism centred around the worship of Strong Men who do Hero Things.

I guess what sticks out to me about it here is that it's clearly not a Doug Ford policy. Like, it's real far from what he does and he's definitely not in the intellectual circles where he'd be hearing or reading this stuff. Makes me think about the structure of conservative politics, and how the policy-making is so thoroughly outsourced that the parties can run whatever rich-rear end bootlicker like Ford they want.

Oh god no, not even close. The Love Am Troop stuff is much more thorough and goes back much deeper than that. The book that I was discussing with dreylad goes into it in way more detail. The conflict over the "narrative" of Canada goes back to colonial anxiety over having to prove their being authentically British, and the specific Love Am Troop stuff starts with WWI.

The policy stuff is also very generically conservative — the exact same stuff is done and said by British and American conservatives and they sure as poo poo aren't taking directions from our tiny rear end backwater. I mean sure Harper styles himself an intellectual in the way that only a soft-headed bootlicker can, but that just means similarity between Ford and Harper should be understood as them taking policy from the same sources.

This is just another thing where we're doing what the US does a few years later. Republican state-level politicians basically just take all their legislation proposals directly from ALEC, which is a conservative organization that drafts up "model legislation" that they can stamp their name on and push on their state regardless of whatever the local politics are. I would not be surprised at all if the Conservative party were taking notes.

Oh yeah I totally know about that. What I'm thinking about is the effects of that set up, and how it lets political parties change how they operate. It's probably worth thinking about in light of the Powell memorandum — conservative counter-institutions and all that.

UCP says Criminal Code should be amended to support use of force in rural self-defence

quote:

The UCP wants to ensure the following points are considered in sentencing if someone uses force in self-defence:

If police were delayed or did not respond at all.

If the offender failed to leave the premises once confronted.

The number of people committing a crime, and if they appeared to be intoxicated.

Whether or not the accused was armed or exhibited threatening behaviour.

"Property owners who are victims of repeated break-ins and thefts, without suitable police response, are warned by police, or even charged, when they use their lawfully owned firearms to defend themselves, their families, and their property from brazen criminals," reads the report.

They really do want to be Americans.
