On the topic of essence, I'm at 1500 and need 300 more to unlock the thing but I've done all the warrior graves and the trees and I'm not sure where or how to get more essence?

I think I read you need some kind of key to get into the area underneath that one? Where is it?

Also I think I got Dreamgate but idk what it does

You're talking about getting into the Abyss? You need the King's Brand, which is in Kingdom's Edge IIRC.

There are three bosses (well, originally, now there are a few more) you can Dream Nail to fight harder versions of themselves, each gives several hundred essence. They are:

False Knight -> Failed Champion, this one is a little hidden, there's a breakable wall on the right above where his body is

Soul Master -> Soul Tyrant

Broken Vessel -> Lost Kin

These are lategame/endgame fights, be decked out before trying them. Not that you can't do it earlier but you will have to be better longer since you do less damage/have less health/etc.

man what

Lost Kin is probably the easiest of the original dream superbosses since equipping Defender's Crest neutralises the only source of difficulty it has.

Failed Champion is a mixed bag and he can be mechanically be tough but he also falls easily enough to the bruteforce build. If you don't know what that is, just think "what charms would I equip if I didn't care at all about dodging or healing, just attacking as much and as fast as possible". If you can't confidently come up with a setup for this, you don't have the right charms yet.

Soul Tyrant is literally just Soul Master but faster and they can't be bruteforced, so while they're probably not 'the hardest' on average, they were the hardest for me since I had to actually do the fight properly and be patient instead of going wild.

Soul Tyrant is a lot easier when you recognize which attack gives you a guaranteed window for healing. same thing with the mantis lords

You can kind of trick Failed Champion into just repeatedly jumping over you if you stick close enough to the corners of the arena, that made the fight way easier for me.

I think it was if he was off screen he'd always use the same move to get back on, which simplified things a lot.

Also Grey Prince Zote who is pretty easy and gives out quite a bit of essence

That last stretch of no floor during the Trial of the Fool is my loving bane right now. I've only managed to clear it once so far and of course panicked and biffed the boss. Any tips for particularly that part? I can cruise through everything else, just something about having to jump and wall hug causes me to eat every possible bit of damage I can.

take the charm that gives you the orbiting shield, focus solely on your maneuvering and let it do the work. you can throw in the grimmchild too if you have it.

edit: don't be afraid to throw out a howling wraiths if you've got the juice for it, it's not like you can use it for healing during that part anyway

the spiky floor segment gets a lot easier if you can kill off aspids and the ramming mosquito types quickly. if your sword is fully upgraded, a charge attack will one-shot them. the waves get a lot more manageable if you charge up a hit before spawn and instantly swat one of the small guys as they appear.

the armoured flying fighters have lots of horizontal reach but can't attack upwards at all. clear out small enemies first and you can just pogo them to death.

the charm that increases charge speed is really good here and only costs one notch

Just confirming, the only ending in the game that you can get locked out of is the worst ending, which involves not completing certain things before completing the game, without going too much into it. Is this correct?

Yes, and the ending you get locked out of is EXTREMELY similar to the one you get. The only notable thing you really miss out on is an achievement.

For those in the know is it better, more sequential, to do Grimm first or Radiance?

Troup Leader Grimm, Radiance, then Nightmare King Grimm is probably the smoothest difficulty curve, but IMO NKG is way more fun to fight than Radiance.

Makes no difference. The former is harder, but the latter is obviously the only one that is actually an ending.

Well, I'm super confused. Fighting Hollow Knight, and I've either killed him or am amidst triggering a new phase, but he's just stuck in death throes? spraying orange poo poo every where. Tried whacking him with my nail, dream nail and everything else in my arsenal. Tried talking to him. Can't access my inventory... what the hell am I missing here?

this game is immensely satisfying, the only reason i haven't beat it is the tiny switch joycons wreak havoc on the joints/tendons in my hands

i'm a little disappointed the plot seems to be dark souls: a bug's life edition, but at the very least it does a very good job of imitating the style, story beats, atmosphere, etc. and i love dark souls anyway so it's a neat reimagining

It definitely wears it's Dark Souls influence on it's sleeve, although I think it has enough of it's own identity that it doesn't feel overly derivative to me. Although some of the naming conventions sound like they were made in some random "Dark Souls name" generator and yeah the story is pretty much bug souls.

If there is one thing I wish I had loving known about this game it's that the dreamgate is pretty easy to get and to fight those drat ghosts when you run into them to get a decent amount of essence instead of putting them off till the very end of the game. I would have probably saved myself 15 hours.

You don't need to start over, you can just load your last save and it will bring you to the last bench you used before the boss.
