Hah, remember in the 90s it was expected for dudes to hate Leo, but now we're all "He's awesome!!".

I guess when he just stopped being a pretty boy in movies made for women to cry at and started making actual movies we started to see him for the actor he is. Heh remember the rumor he was going to play Anakin in Episode 2? At the time that was the worst possible thing, but now we know that would have been a million times better.

Nah, I'd seen Gilbert Grape when it came out, so I knew all along he was a hell of an actor.

(Actually I saw it with my mom, who was a special ed teacher and therefore rather experienced in the mannerisms and ways of special kids; she was deeply impressed by that young actor's portrayal of such.)

His big follow-up to Titanic was an adaptation of The Man In the Iron Mask, which you can watch as a kind of pseudo-trilogy along with the other big, flashy Alexandre Dumas adaptations in the 90s along with the Disney version of The Three Mustketeers with Chris O'Donnell as D'Artagnan and the version of The Count of Monte Criso with Jim Caviezel.

You can even throw in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves while you're at it.

Song 2 was by far their most popular song, but yea I don't think they really made a big dent in the US. Even Canada didn't see a lot of them either, but I was always surprised when I'd go to the US on vacation, MTV had such a limited selection of music in comparison to MuchMusic.

While I know, technically late 80's, how can you mention Britpop and not mention the Stone Roses, the innovators:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D2qcbu26gs

And Blur, while definetly Britpop, Blur were decidedly not Manchester. Blur v. Oasis was just as much London v. Manchester as it was about the music.

While it may not have been typically Britpop, Cornershop was Britpop none the less. Especially the remix by Fatboy Slim. Nothing says 90's more than a Fatboy Slim remix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0BkP5HDWj0

I didn't include the Stone Roses because I never really liked them, ditto with Suede. But you're completely right that they are the proto britpop band.

And I didn't include Blur with Manchester, it was something I read in a Q magazine years ago, and it was more in the context "that's why they couldn't see more success, because they were being associated with a dying scene".

I honestly thought Cornershop was a Canadian band. That song got played all the time in the 90s here, and that normally happens only with Canadian bands. But yea, they're 100% britpop based on sound.

That'd probably be right for early Blur. There's No Other Way and Bang etc absolutely have that Madchester sound. I didn't know they were a London band at first, they were so similar to Inspiral Carpets, James, Charlatans etc. But it was just the one album and really Q should know better.

My mum thought blur were a bunch of posers. Says they presaged the whole trend you see now where all the guitar bands are public school sorts whose parents bought them their instruments. I don't know about that though I know it's the stereotype around blur; I like their music well enough but know very little about them themselves.

A lot of really talented musicians got their start when their parents bought or gave them stuff. Slash was given a flamenco guitar with one string by his grandmother. Eric Clapton was given a guitar for a birthday present when he was 13. Paul McCartney started on his parents' piano, was given a trumpet for his birthday, and traded it for a guitar.

Or is the idea that it doesn't count if your parents had enough money to buy you a Squier Strat instead of a termite-eaten piece of balsa wood with two strings in the wrong places that they fished out of the dumpster?

We're were super into these weird shows. Street Sharks, Captain Bucky O'Hare, and a few others that slip my mind.

We also had a poo poo load of 5 inch GI Joes and a few Street Fighter figures. Mostly, though, with 4 boys we had a ton of the 12 inch GI Joes. They're all packed away and I bet they're worth something.

No, it's not that. My parents bought me my saxophone for my birthday 15 years ago (still sounds great) so I'm not apt to complain. It's partly this idea that's discussed a lot in the British music and theatre press that working class kids (like the Gallagher brothers) have a much harder time getting into the arts today than they used to, and partly the whole stereotype that developed around blur back in the 90s (I wasn't paying attention - I don't know if it's fun or not) being the middle-class band who could switch their accents on and off depending who they were speaking to.

Edit: I'm not necessarily making a value judgment about it - my parents gave me my first saxophone 15 years ago (still plays well) so I would be hypocritical if I did so.

Yep, that was the basically what they were talking about, if I'm remembering correctly is said once they were able to break away from that association they were able to gain their success.

Wait, so is the Monty Pythonesq taking the piss out of the upper class in many of their songs and videos an act to hide Blur's origins?

The one I remember is an episode of Dragon Ball Z (!) where Gotenks refers to Majin Buu as a (ahem) "candy-rear end human being". Of course it's because western anime fans used to be (probably still are - I haven't been into for a while) really hung-up on it being "adult" and everything. I also remember one forum I posted on circa 2007 where the anime thread was people bitching that Pokémon had been bowdlerised by the dubbers.

Of course, the greatest anime dub of all time - Angel Cop - came about because they got a bunch of English voice actors doing questionable American accents who were explicitly told to "15 it up" by putting in a bunch of swearing.

Some cheaper/:spergin: professional localizations do it, and I despise it too. It's because they think the words are important and lose some degree of definition in translation. Whereas instead they lose total understanding by dragging the viewer's attention away to get the dictionary definition for this one untranslated word.

A good example is actually in the official Dangan Ronpa translations; He's called Monokuma, because that's his name :pseudo:. Except if you already understand Japanese, you know kuma means bear, so why not take that small step and translate it to Monobear? It's not exactly butchering the original script to translate the names to preserve the intended meaning.
