The One Ring isn't even remotely D&D-like, this document sucks. :colbert:

A: I Want Exactly Dungeons and Dragons

You want to play Torchbearer, 13th Age, Shadows of the Demon Lord, or The One Ring. These are complicated games that require a lot of reading, involve complicated characters with many abilities and moving parts, and generally require a lot of investment to play, about as much as Dungeons and Dragons does. These games require a commitment.

Yeah, 13th Age is the only one in that section that I would call 'close enough' to D&D.

SotDL kinda works, too. I'd say it's as D&D-adjacent as 13A is.

Not Torchbearer or ToR though.

Also, I know my opinions on Dungeon World are obvious, but I really can't think of any reason to play Dungeon World over Fellowship.

The same reasons a lot of people love Pathfinder: there's a metric fuckton of content for it and it feels like D&D.

Unlike most other games, D&D is more like a religion than something you can refer to a single text and say "That's what it is."

Yeah, Shadowrun kinda has a similar thing. There are huge arguments about how the setting is supposed to be portrayed and how the game is supposed to be played.

Anyone else here find the whole "D&D is bad and you shouldn't play it" attitude that keeps coming up in stuff like that incredibly obnoxious?

even if I do agree that 3rd Edition and Pathfinder are bad, and that 5e is the epitome of mediocre, the other editions are perfectly fine though

Not really, it’s fun to post and it’s dumb to hide your opinions to fit some discourse. If you don’t like it don’t read the 2 threads it pops up in now

We should be able to resolve this kind of discussion by trial of combat or something. Like we get one of the fucktards who hate DND and me on the octagon, hand to hand only, UFC 1 rules. Whoever wins is right on the matter.

There's a four year old '5e bad' thread with multiple posters who have felt the need to post over 1000 times about the topic. Talking about d&d being bad is extremely important to them, I guess.

On the one hand: All editions of D&D have deep flaws, some more than others. D&D is its own weird subgenre and playstyle. I must agree that if someone told me they want to get into D&D, I'd rather introduce them to any of several cleaner, simpler D&Dalikes than D&D itself, for purposes of clarity and ease of play.

On the other hand: Multiple generations of 10 year olds have figured D&D out without us online turbonerds carefully curating their elfgame experience, and D&D as a genre has never been more visible than it is now. D&D can be very frustrating but it's not that hard, and if people want to get into the hobby, I don't think the text of any edition of D&D is going to turn them off and turn them away forever.

fool_of_sound posted:

In Shadowrun's case it's also fair to blame the text for being incoherent and fostering some crappy attitudes in the fanbase. (I remember back in the day, you could easily find "Here's my house rules for mecha" and "If your Shadowrun games involve combat you hosed up" on the same website.)

What's more, Twitch and Actual Play podcasts serve quite well as the mythical 'older cousin' who teaches you how the game flows and the basics of the rules. Pretty much nobody is learning the game right out of the books, from scratch, anymore.

Mocking 5e was a lot more fun when 5e wasn't actually out yet and it was an ongoing process of watching Mike Mearls fall down an endless staircase of bad design and giving us sneak peaks of content that turned out not to be anywhere in the game.

That reminds me of the people in Games who made GAMEPLAY DISCUSSION ONLY threads for games like Skullgirls and Dead or Alive because they couldn't handle people criticizing the character designs, themes, development team history, etc. of games they like.

It's like making a CINEMATOGRAPHY ONLY thread for a movie.

D&D is pretty garbage overall, largely due to its culture and fanbase. All of the appeal comes from nostalgia and its role as "default fantasy. "

Define what you mean by "high magic."

Do you want inscrutable wizards with world-changing powers or do you want DBZ but they shout "Magic missile!"

Magic is common and forms a sort of backbone to society or technology, i.e. isn’t particularly “special”. The system can handle actions by characters who intuitively weave magic as easily as mundane characters can move around.

Basically a system that can handle “I’m a fire mage so I’m going to <anything fire related>” without breaking horribly and letting players control the sun at level 1.
