Homestuck, but more of it, and again.

Honestly, yeah this

Homestuck had a ton of flaws and tbh was a bit of a mess but man was it an absolute hell of a ride. It’s hard to recommend it to new people because the hype surrounding it was very much a “you had to be there” thing but getting drawn into the whirlwind of hype that was homestuck was some of the most fun I’ve ever had with any media literally ever.

I dunno if a comic will ever match that level of insanity again tbh. Like I’m honestly not sure how a comic could whip people up into that level of frenzy again where they do things like accidentally ddos multiple sites (including a popular filesharing site) in an attempt to view a single update.

EOA5 crashing Newgrounds was a great moment

People were crying real tears because they couldn't find it anywhere

I remember downloading the animation pieces from where I could and re-hosting for my friends

Also, we had an app on the PC to warn us whenever there was an update

...this kinda makes it sound like it was an abusive relationship...

Does anyone read Sinfest? I used to enjoy it for a long time, even when I disagreed with some of his political leanings. But I recently found out that he is very likely anti-trans, so I've got a free space for another comic to read.

Zorch! Splat! Pow!
Isn’t Sinfest the comic where the main characters were all unironically “babes and boobs! yowza!” but then the author did an about-face and started doing a bunch of badass Kate Beaton-style Strong Female Character “empowerment” stuff with those male characters acting very repentant?

Doesn’t surprise me that he could stray from there into TERF territory, I guess.

Wow I just went and read like... the last 20 pages of Sinfest, since the last I'd heard it was an extremely anodyne comic.

I'm not sure where a giant flying pimp robot following a giant flying Uncle Sam robot to recruit refugees as prostitutes fits into, well, anything. Other than a convincing argument that I made a bad decision when I went to that website.

Also, the whole thing oozes misogyny of the 'oh you're not like all those filthy other girls, and I respect you' type.

The writer of Sinfest has been having a long-form mental breakdown on the page for, uh, the past five years or so.

I knew he was anti-porn and anti-sex work for a long time. But he recently rebooted his forums and was like, "If you're not a radfem gtfo." Then some trans-woman asked on the new forums if trans people were cool. He refused to answer that question and instead attacked her on some other innocuous point, all while other members said transphobic poo poo. LOL. I was always into the art, but I'm done with that shithead now.

Years ago I gave it a try and read around 1 year of strips but not only were they very repetitive but there was also this weird alpha male bro-type vibe but it wasn't uncommon at the time to have this position, especially in webcomics; but it seems he turned around 180 on the misogyny spectrum and is now an Ernest Cline-like Nice Guy, which is pretty impressive.

It's terrible, but impressive.

I am 100% for feminism. Sinfest however did a hard turn into a weird straw form of feminism. It was the 'no such thing as allies' strip that had me stop reading. (It basically said that males are inherently evil and cannot redeem themselves)

I used to read it but I dropped it years ago.

It was having a storyline that was some sort of Matrix parody with succubus robots that broke free of their programming to join a bunch of tricycle-riding feminist midgets and it was honestly more boring and less coherent than I'm making it sound.

Not a surprise this would veer into TERF then.

self-loathing cis male terfs are hilarious because they absolutely cannot grasp that their experience growing up male-assigned and a trans woman's experience growing up male-assigned are actually quite different in not just one but several ways!

Sinfest's hard veer into "radfems are completely right" would not surprise me either if transphobia messages came out to play.

Sinfest is like a less subtle Zen Pencils in that it is an attempt at cloying Hallmarky eat pray love widom by an insane person, you may fairly enjoy that kind of entertainment or you may not but if you're finding yourself disengaged with it because you once agreed with its worldview but now it's said something you disagree with that is a sign you need to be on so many pills.

Gone on hiatus until the 24th, depriving the thread of new bad content to dissect. Sorry.

EDIT: Also yeah that happened, but it feels like it was forever ago already. Though, given the pacing, the actual punching of mental illness was a while back. Oh, and also the next chapter is going to be the last one, but also they promise the chapter will last years. Betting is now open on which plot threads will be lucky enough to get a conclusion.

I've seen a few men with untreated mental health issues take this sort of penitent martyr tack on feminist thought, and it usually doesn't indicate much actual respect for women, just an extraordinary amount of personal insecurity.
