Yeah I saw ST2 yesterday too. It didn’t make me laugh once. To me, the thing about Super Troopers, Anchorman and Zoolander sorts of comedies is that the concept itself is funny, making the characters fun and original. Staple in a sequel with the same, now unoriginal, concept and it’s going to be bland. There was no way to make a good Super Troopers 2.

I got thirty minutes into Zoolander 2, thought I was an hour and a half in, and shut it off. I never shut movies off but holy poo poo what an intensely unfunny movie. The only good joke I saw was how the Derek Zoolander School For Kids Who Want To Read Good burned down because they made it out of the same materials as the model.

Zoolander was obviously going to suck from the trailer, where Zoolander misunderstands the title "Zoolander II" as 'zoolander eye eye', and not 'Zoolander eleven'. If they mess up easy gags like that (even if the better version still isn't that funny), I can't imagine how badly the rest of the humor flops

You could feel their hearts just weren't in it.

On the top of sequels to cult comedies: Hot Tub Time Machine 2. That movie had almost no heart to it and actually like it was a mean-spirited sequel and I really think it was a rushed script for filming and not the original plan for the movie. I think once they realized they weren't getting Cusack back and they weren't getting a big budget, they weren't going to waste the material. But in terms of comedy sequels, I get the 'resetting' is a thing, though. That the first film will have something in it that audience will really connect with and even if they move past it by the end of that movie, the sequel brings it back around and doubles down on it and the characters didn't learn a thing. But at some point it feels like a parody of itself than something unique.

The type of comedies that are Super Troopers and others tend to build up way more pre-release hype than box office rewards, but they'll sometimes find a second life in the home video market. I remember when Pick of Destiny was getting hyped to all hell and back by just about everyone a decade ago just to have it mostly fade in and out of theaters with under $10M.

A politician was pretty much that in canada. They also built on old jokes like the liter of cola then the canadian shenanigans actually having it and then farva uping the ante to 10 liters of cola for free desert. The part I didn't like was them pretending to be the mounties that was 100% rehash. Youre not wrong alot of jokes are just LOL @ canadian / french canandian accents. but even those jokes had some gems like will sasso pretending to not know that danny devito is frank reynolds.

Idiocracy is too mean spirited. The concept of rampant consumerism and shallow media creating a world of idiots is okay, but the film's never clear about what it is supposed to be criticising. It's not just Walmart and Fox that get made fun of, but also a whole bunch of cultural signifiers that the film thinks are just 'dumb', no explanation necessary. Don't have the tastes of a middle- to high income household? Sorry, but you're clearly lacking in intelligence for not liking the things I like. Watching it feels like being stuck with an elitist, arrogant highschool kid who's sure he's edgy as gently caress, has everything figured out and thinks everything he doesn't like is dumb.

And that's a cool thing to say, even if the message gets horribly mangled in the execution. Or you could make a pretty good point about it being satire on babyboomer nightmares. But if I want to watch a weird future where all our small shortcomings have run wildly out of control, then Futurama blows Idiocracy out of the water. Unless you only watch the first five minutes, it's pretty blatant with how it pokes fun at people that think they're smart and that the working class are somehow beneath them. The people that considered themselves to be better than others literally die out because they devoted their lives to enriching their bosses.

Quote-Unquote posted:Huh? It's literally Average Joe that saves mankind from five centuries of increasing corporate dominance of the planet. How can you take this: As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species. And not interpret it as favoring eugenics?
