Something I personally overlooked about the MGS series was how each iteration of Metal Gear is sold to us as this impossibly powerful, invincible death machine that is the end result of billions of dollars, brilliant scientific minds bent to the task, who knows how many engineers manufacturing it, etc. And for what? So it can get blown to pieces by some guy with a rocket launcher in the end. Every single time. Wonderful commentary on the defense industry.

REX was literally indestructible. The only way Solid could beat it was by using Grey Fox to take out Liquid inside the cockpit

every other Metal Gear was pretty weak though, yeah

Hayter is inarguably a poo poo voice actor but he is even more inarguably excellent for the role of Snake.

It's like Ozzy Osbourne. That dude cannot sing by any definition but he's absolutely perfect for his music.

I'm arguing it. It is not inarguable. David Hayter is a national treasure and he is also very handsome. I would mow David Hayter's lawn and I wouldn't even charge him: that's how much I respect him.

Hayter does not do dramatic very well. He can do the stoic badass really well (see conversations with Otacon in 1 and 2, talking with the bosses after beating them in 1, semi-mocking Ocelot in MGS3) but in MGS3 or Peace Walker when he has to talk solemnly about The Boss it’s mostly just flat.

But anyone who listens to any of his conversations with Paramedic in MGS3 and goes “This guy sucks!” is lying only to themselves :colbert:

I was actually kinda disappointed the story for mgs v went as literal with everything as it could have been.
Seemed like some wasted potential.
The way Man on Fire looks like he could be in a version of TPP's sneaking suit in the hospital, and he's full of bullets and shrapnel it would've been cool as a manifestation of Snake's rage
Or if Ishmael would've just been in Venom Snake's head, or died in the ambulance and Venom was the only thing carrying on Big Boss's legacy.
I already knew the twist since I didn't play it at release in the vaguest way, which made a bunch of the opening hospital scene seem more like it was stylized or supposed to be filled with hallucinations. Hell if Big Boss had actually died saving Venom that would've been a very interessting way to end the series. Plus it's not like Kojima wasn't already heavily retconning poo poo.

I would love to see Metal Gear:Pentagon Wars.

:downs: - Great job on the new Metal Gear, an unstoppable walking battle tank. I'm just thinking though, why don't we make it so that it can shoot down light aircraft.

:) - General, that would require a pretty extensive retooling of the radom and optics. And if we redesign it, the pilot could end up blind if the radom were damaged.

:downs: - Blind? Pshaw! They could just open the cockpit and fight directly.

I remember enjoying the scene in MGS1 where Snake is in the prison cell and has that heart to heart with Naomi. Or specifically when Snake is telling Naomi about his past.

Maybe include a compartment to hold soldiers with anti-air weapons. I hear the Soviets made great strides in packing dozens of troops inside armored vehicles during the Peace Walker incident.

That's not what gaslighting means you hyperbolic dipshit.
With as janky and weird as the characters and stories in this series are, and as amazing as the gameplay concept of “stealth combat expert with every post-WWII weapon and combat toy that has ever existed (and a few that haven’t) available“ is, I’m surprised there aren’t more IP’s taking a stab at perfecting this kind of gameplay and pairing it with actually coherent stories.

Like, can you even imagine a game with the absolute perfection of MGSV’s moment to moment mechanics, but that actually had an interesting, complete story grounded in at least realistic fiction and characters that weren’t anime as hell.

Because I can’t. It would be too awesome.

Good point, at this stage of my life it probably would not be good to lose thousands of hours to a game that amazing.

Nah those games are nearly as good, mechanically speaking.

As for story, I’m not thinking limiting things to some boring rear end military faction fighting another military faction HELL YEAH MERKA game. It could be anything. A grand theft auto style bank heist game set in a huge open, interesting, colorful world, and Indiana Jones/uncharted style archaeology game, Hell I don’t know I’m just spitballing. The point is it could be a lot more interesting than what you’re thinking I meant.

I think that's what they're asking for? A grounded 'realistic' military game with the infinite padding of MGSV but an even less interesting story and characters than the already low bar that had?

I dunno man, I feel like Kojima's brand of stealth has already pollinated into a large part of the AAA game industry. Maybe we haven't had a milporn one in a while but Tomb Raider, Last of Us, HZD and many others are all going deeper and deeper into the "creep through foliage, peek around cover" school of games.

You could say that stealth games snuck up on you
