Evil Sabertooth was always written so inconsistently anyway. In one story he'd be a heartless merc who'll do anything for money, in another he'll be a wild animal obsessed with revenge, and in yet another he's basically just Carnage. All they could agree on is that he's a dick.

I remember on Jay and Miles explain the X-Men that around the time of the Mutant Massacre Sinister had a bunch of clones of the marauders so maybe the inconsistent Sabretooth were clones. They weren't but they could have been

Although to muddy that, I seem to recall that Sabertooth was his one Marauder Sinister didn't clone. (And I guess Malice too, who I don't think had a physical form.)

I may be mis remembering but the Birdy story was after he got spiked through his brain and was kind a mindless doof for a while there. Once his memories came back he went full on murder murder murder again.

Yeah. Although don't forget the X-Men trying to tame him for a while (complete with, like, Boom-Boom bringing him milk in his cage) until he went 'psych!' and carved up Psylocke. (Again.) Which gave us that Crimson Dawn stuff, if I remember right.

Yeah that tracks with what I recall. I think he actually was a blank state/feral for a while.

Sabretooth was killed repeatedly in the late Claremont era of X-Men and was definitely cloned by Sinister. Birdy first shows up in the brief Lee-without-Claremont run of X-Men where they sort of revamp Sabretooth in a slick merc with a girlfriend or whatever. The whole "Birdy gives him The Glow to keep him from being a psychopath" bit was introduced I think in post-Lee Lobdell era X-Men, and she's killed in the 1994 Sabretooth mini-series.

All of this is before the big fight immediately before Age of Apocalypse, where Wolverine lobotimizes him with his claw.

Then during Age of Apocalypse Sabretooth basically plays the Wolverine role as "noble warrior fighting to contain his berserker rage" and I think a series of X-Men trading cards spoil that Sabretooth will reform after counselling from Xavier to join the X-Men.

*Then* you get the whole "ha ha he's faking it and he's super evil" reveal. But they still make him reluctantly team up with the X-Men in the Phalanx Covenant. Then he's forced to join X-Factor with a bomb collar, Suicide Squad style. And I think after that they gave up on trying to make him part of an X-Team for a decade or two.

There was also a stint pre-Onslaught where I swear that the X-Men had anywhere between 3 and 5 people in their basement in comas at any given time, they could have formed a team out of them.

I think during that run where Bachalo was doing art on some X-men book (really specific, I know) and something was going on with Changelings, he was briefly teamed up with the X-men again, so that happened. I think that culminated with him turning on them when Cable's Island Retreat exploded and ruined Cable and Deadpool.

That was Mike Carey's run where Iceman hooks up with Mystique briefly before she betrays everyone, because of course she does, it's loving Mystique. She can look like anything she wants and her favorite outfit has a belt that's tiny skulls on it.

Whenever I try to remember X-men storylines I just get a lancing pain in my brain stem so I'll have to take your word for it.

I remember Rogue wearing a ridiculous trenchcoat... and... something about space.

Mike Carey's run was good, the space stuff was Brubaker which wasn't up to what I'd expect from Brubaker but ties into the post Annihilation cosmic stuff (War of Kings specifically) so kinda worth reading if you're into that.

I'd never heard of the first story. Which one was it? Claire Temple, Harmony Young, or someone else? Presumably not Jessica Jones.

edit: NM, it was Harmony. Which is kind of a sucky thing to do to basically a comedy character, but hey, comics!

Oh, right. They kept Emma Frost down there too, and she bodyjacked Bobby for an issue. It was yet another 'man you don't know how powerful you are Bobby' issue. I forget why she was comatose. She also woke up in time to start Generation X happily(?).

PG's not quite as bad as Donna, but she's been retconned a couple of times, going from being Earth-Two's version of Supergirl to a magical descendant of Arion of Atlantis and back.

Also, no discussion of messy origins is complete without Hawkman and Hawkgirl/woman. They're reincarnations of ancient Egyptians! They're alien space cops (who have either been on Earth a while, or have just arrived)! They're both, somehow!

I remember it pissing me off since it was the final issue of the Cyclops series I had been enjoying up until then.

Also there's currently two Angels: young Angel who was taken forward in time and got laser wings, and old (Arch)Angel who can transform between regular wings Angel and metal wings Archangel, and had his evil genes suppressed.

Supergirl was changed to be from a planet near krypton I think? One that was under the same sun so she'd get the same powers from yellow sunlight. And then she was a goo angel for a while I think.

In the second arc of Jeph Loeb's Batman/Superman book another Supergirl appears that's her cousin from Krypton's sister planet, similar origin to the Supergirl in the DCAU cartoon. I think the post New 52 Supergirl has a similar origin too.
