I didn't see the final boss as being a jumping puzzle in any particular way that was different from other bosses in the game. Having to fight the preceding boss every time first was pretty tedious but at least he's a pushover and you get healed before the second fight.

Losing geo is still bullshit though, it actively takes progress from you that you can up having to tediously grind money to get back. It's particularly annoying before you have access to the Trial of the Conqueror to get money more quickly.

yeah, it's ok for people to say "i didn't like it because the jumping is bad" and then it's also ok for me to say "i liked it because the jumping is good"

hollow knight is extremely clearly a metroidvania though

hollow knight is a 2d exploration based platformer. people call those "metroidvanias" for short because metroid, and castlevania, are two examples of that genre.

i'm glad you agree they belong to the same genre, thus it's totally fair game to compare games within that genre

I'm glad that Hollow Knight doesn't just copy everything from metroid/castlevania and actually tries to do its own thing

the only metroidvanias i've ended up liking are just actually castlevania or metroid games, i think i've hated drat near every other one.

though shadow complex was cool.

i disagree, saying you can't put something in your game because two other different games that happen to be similar to it don't have that thing is unfair.

i agree that that one guy is dumb

but it's totally fair to make comparisons between games in the genre imo

hollow knight did a lot of cool things that broke away from the mold a bit but i also think there are more traditional mechanics that would have improved the hollow knight experience for me

likewise if you think two older similar games did something better than it should be fine to point that out.

hollow knight does do a bunch of cool unique things and i personally don't think making the map system shittier than games that came out on the super nintendo is that great.

I don't think it's shittier. It might be more inconvenient for the player but at the same time I really like what it does for the feeling of exploration in the game. I think Hollow Knight would be a lesser game without it.

It's obviously a pretty divisive feature though.

I never saved passwords, it was my mission as a hardcore seven year-old to beat the game in one sitting or give up entirely.

Every now and then I'll find a game with a manual with notes scribbled in it

I know the manuals for one of (it not both of) the Ecco the dolphin games just had a notes section followed by a place to put the passwords for each level, and more than once i've seen those filled in (or filled them out myself)

Also bought a copy of Zero Divide on the PS1 that had a cheat code from Tips & Tricks glued to the notes section that told you how to play the hidden Tiny Phalanx minigame on it.

is there a best version of ff6 to play or should i just emulate the original

SNES original is probably the overall "best" version, especially if your Japanese is good enough to play it in Japanese. Translation is iffy but has its charms.
PS1 re-release is fine but has quite a bit of loading. Not terrible like Chrono Trigger, but still worth noting. If you have a Vita or a PS3 you can get it for like 6 bucks on PSN.
GBA version has a much better translation, music quality takes a dive, though, and that's pretty major for this game. Still not a bad option.
Mobile/PC version takes an iffy direction with the graphics, but has the newer translations in multiple languages as well as good music.

if you're willing to get the hardware to fully legally rip your personal copy of ff6 advance to your computer, there are romhacks that restore the original snes audio to the gba version

I'd be cool if someone would make a true ripoff of Metroid, since Nintendo seems determined to never make another one.

incidentally i'm surprised nobody's made a romhack for the snes version that adds the gba content, because iirc all the postgame monsters are fully present in the game data but they simply ran out of room on the cart to add in a bonus dungeon
