There's quite a few hurdles to pass: 1. You have to be close friends with them - that's more of a universal thing 2. Depending on how big the subject is, you wouldn't be complaining in public, - people in China are more sensitive about this 3. Their political background. - again related to point 1 4. How X policy / tax will affect them People criticize the government plenty enough, that's why something new is always loving censored and the government spends god knows how much on propaganda. When it comes to Chinese politics and the white elephant in the room, people are really nihilistic and just roll their eyes all the time. So if you are complaining about the lack of democracy and opaque government or something more abstract then people might give you a funny look. Whereas you talk about something smaller like all public school teachers passing a chastity test and having permission from the principal to have a kid, then yeah people will talk about it. Complain about the new housing tax, mandatory phone searches and checkpoints for everyone in Xinjiang, Gossip about the son of a higher up party official getting drunk and running over some pedestrians without getting any punishment by using his dad's name? I like how they got the  Exeter University in England to co-author this paper.While this could very well be accurate and interesting, it's a diamond in a latrine; that is to say, the questionable academics from China could affect this actually interesting development of the archaeological record. Also,  they're actually Mongolian artifacts and reinforce the mongoloid branch of early humans
