Give us the chicken recipe

Mix up a quick blend of 1 1/2 tbsp of brown sugar, 1 tsp each of paprika and oregano (or whatever, honestly italian seasoning works great), 1/2 tsp of garlic powder, and some salt and pepper. Preheat your oven to 425.

Get like three chicken breasts and butterfly them if they're big or just pound 'em to about a half inch thick if they're not (pound them to about a half inch thick either way).

Line a baking pan with some foil, and once the chicken is on there, rub it with some olive oil and then divide the seasoning mix equally among all the chicken breasts (both sides).

Put the chicken in the oven for about 18-20 minutes. When you pull it out, don't leave it in the pan, transfer it to plates. But then also don't serve it for like three minutes or so. You don't want it soaking in the cooking oil while it cools, but you do want the flavors to distribute. Chop some italian flat leaf parsley up pretty fine and sprinkle it over the top. Serve with whatever I don't care.

I wish I had realized earlier in life how easy cooking actually is. Well, mostly is. I mean I've been doing it pretty well for like five years now but there was a long period of time where I didn't realize you could just oven-roast veggies and it made things like brussels sprouts not awful.

Anyway what I'm saying is that gaming needs more cooking instructions. Educate the youth. Also making dinner if you're hosting is a good idea to make people come. They might not think the game is a big commitment but if someone has made food for you you better come eat it.

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!
So what are people's absolute favorite/best RPGs? What do people personally enjoy playing the most, and what do they think is the best, even if they haven't played it?

I love:

1. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition
The idea of having all of the rules on cards and having special bits to track stats and story stuff with is super cool. I managed to get in on the FFG firesales and have a basically complete set, other than not owning the print on demand stuff. I love this game because it fully embraces the "game" aspect of roleplaying games, really blurring the lines between RPG and board game. Rather than shrieking about it, I think it's really cool when rpgs borrow from other media. I think the biggest issue with WFRP3 other than the practicality of acquiring it is that it's really not that well-balanced/strategic of a game. It still suffers from the RPG issue of strategy being a matter of choosing skills and equipment rather than choices made during combat. Still, really innovative and fun approach to gaming, with so many cool and fun moving parts.

Mutant: Year Zero
This game more than any other medium-complexity game I've played blends mechanics and theme perfectly. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world of decay and strange threats. Every time you roll dice, you risk damaging your stats. You can stave this off with equipment but that won't last either. The necessities like food and water and social interaction are all made important because they're how you heal your stats. Your characters all have mutations that you can only get points to use by taking damage from making a risky move. You all live in a homebase that has mechanical weight, and that the game has you work to build up. There is a set population number for the base and actions you take will make it go down. The players are made to engage in real world concerns in order to play the game. It's fantastic.

And the game I've played the most of:
FFG Warhammer RPGs
These were the first RPGs I played a campaign in. They introduced me to 40k lore. The setting and game are both so clunky and dumb but also just tickle some dumb instinctual part of my game that likes adding up numbers and making up hardcore characters. The equipment and talents for this game remind me of an Idle Clicker, you build up until you've got a big enough combo to just click "win" over and over on the enemies. Rogue Trader is easily the best setting for this game, because it affords the most freedom both in terms of character choice and ability to fiddle with the setting. That said, there is so much clunky bullshit in the games that playing them is often an exercise in figuring out how much stuff can be ignored without making the players feel bad for maximizing all that equipment they have.

How about other goons? What games rock and more people should play?

Games I've Played Which I've Liked: I'm still in an ongoing D&D4E game and while the system has its flaws if I'm going to play a dungeon crawling swords-and-elves fantasy game it's still my go-to game of choice for the sheer breadth of character options which are fun and don't suck just because you're punching or grappling instead of using a perfectly optimized spiked chain build. Honorable mention goes to Gamma World 7E which is basically Gamma World by way of D&D4E. Hunter: the Vigil is basically what a lot of people wanted Hunter: the Reckoning to be, myself included. Of the 40K RPGs I've played, Black Crusade accomplishes a delicate balancing act of making playing Chaos actually fun and interesting to play without devolving into the really basic "piles of dead babies" shock gore porn that it could easily have fallen prey to, and while the system is absolutely no better than any of the other 40K games at least everybody gets the option of doing ridiculous bullshit. I continue to appreciate Greg Stolze's Reign though my actual play experiences with it have all been short. Unknown Armies will probably always be a personal favorite of mine as well. Of the various Fate implementations, I actually feel like the Atomic Robo RPG gives some of the best bang for your buck, I prefer its implementation of skills and powers to those found in other versions of the game.

Games I Haven't Played Yet But I'd Like To: Unity looks like a genuine "4E retroclone" of sorts that I wouldn't mind giving a spin, The Spire's mechanics don't seem wildly innovative but the multiple stress tracks representing the consequences to everything from your physical health to your cover identities and infamy is neat and the setting is nicely evocative, I have yet to play a Fragged Empire game or one of its spinoffs, Lancer remains in unfinished beta but is still probably the mech RPG I'm most looking forward to though fool of sound has sold me on taking a closer look at Battle Century G, and at some point I'd like to play a game of Tenra Bansho Zero just to say I've done it. Oh, and Double Cross.

e; actually I had a ton of fun playing in Inexplicable Humblebrag's Only War game so I should probably put that up there but to be fair that was more a result of him than Only War in particular, I doubt most other GMs would run it with the same sort of verve.

I'm loving Apocalypse World and the games made from it, even if most of my playing them is through PbP which tends to end with them dying early. I found a group online to try Monster of the Week, but the discord we set up has been silent so that might not be happening. I had an Apocalypse World game going recently but it lost steam, I might try again. I'm also looking through older games and currently trying out Dogs in the Vineyard. I thought about InSpectres because it could solve the problem of people dropping out - it seems like it'd be real easy to just bring someone else in. But I feel like you'd have to watch the thread to know when that happens, which might not be fun for those waiting. I backed the second edition of the Mountain Witch, because I liked the first edition and this one is slightly updated and will also come with alternate settings if people don't want to do the default one.

I'd like to try out Dungeon World sometime, but the games here use the bajillions of fan playbooks which alter and change things a bunch and also require you to buy them - it'd be nice if there was a list of the good ones you can get for free if the ones in the game aren't that great (something I've heard but never seen for myself since I haven't played).

I love Mutant Year Zero even though there are a couple of really broken mechanics in it. The hexcrawl nature and build-your-civilization minigame are top notch.

Edit: Quoting a goon from the discord. Sine Nomine Publishing was talking about a writing "Worlds Without Number" fantasy-SWN, but it's at least a year or two off right now.

Well, I'm currently running a campaign of Mage: The Awakening and I'm hugely enjoying it. It's a Chronicles of Darkness, aka New World of Darkness, game so a lot of you will already know what kind of thing it is. I really like the Gnostic influences combined with social critique and radical organizing as the underlying structure to the game. It can be a bit pessimistic for me, but the setting overall if flavorful and flexible for telling modern wizard stories. It helps that my group has really leaned into the magical practice elements, which I love.

Also OPP, my group plays and is kind of obsessed with Exalted Third Edition which is a huge improvement over Second Edition, which we did play but had to do a lot of work extricating good parts for use and throwing out bad parts. Ex3 hasn't had anything in actual published volumes that I feel the need to expressly delete from the setting as a GM fiat, which is nice, and all the stuff I do care about (Bronze Age societies with weird postapocalyptic bits, fantasy gundams, lots of cults, culture heroes going at it but being constrained not by a limit to their powers but the limits of culture and their own understanding of the world... all these things make for some fun games, IMO) is present and reinforced. Plus, the new developers, Vance and Minton, were my favorite writers for the line even before they became devs, and what they've produced, the artifacts collection and the Dragon-Blooded splatbook, are excellent. My group is planning to do a relatively light campaign set in a Dragon-Blooded secondary school with rotating GMs, for slice-of-life and coming-of-age kinds of stories in the matriarchal imperial society of the Scarlet Empire.

I'd also really really really really like to play Spire: The City Must Fall both to have a less crunchy experience, and because that setting is killer. I haven't played it so I can't judge.

...I think at some point we bought the D10s for Exalted and as a result we've been very susceptible to 'hey we should play more OPP products' just because we already own the dice and we're used to the style of mechanics, but I'll defend them as being pretty decent crunchy games. Scion 2e looks very good to me, which further makes me wonder about that 'well I have the D10s' effect, but also it seems more suited to modern myths and somewhat lighter epic fantasy than Exalted, which always has at least an air of ancient-world amorality if not tragedy. I've also bumped up against Glorantha a few times and just, it never sticks, probably in no small part because the God Time stuff is less appealing to me than 'the gods literally exist as described in myth, and then mortal relationships to them are complicated and involve many layers of political and cultural interpretation such that people treat them much like myths.'

I'm sure I'll think of something else I really like as soon as I press 'post'

Suck a dick, dumb shits
For me I'd say my top three are probably:

Apocalypse World is just phenomenal. As someone who fancies themselves a designer I'm left in awe by the Bakers' work. It's probably the most carefully, considerately designed game I've ever read or played, and it hangs together like elegant clockwork. The interplay between all the different components is honestly hard to grasp, but when you do it becomes quickly clear just how loving good it is. It's the first game where I can honestly say I don't care what role I play in, it's all good. It's just an awesome, fluid, collaborative experience.

Vampire: the Requiem 2nd Edition is not a mechanical and conceptual masterpiece in the same way but hot drat it's a premise I adore done well. Conditions are useful but not intrusive as they became in later lines, and if gives room to breathe and explore without ever forgetting the central premise. If you want bloody personal stories about vampires, this is probably the best game out there.

And last but definitely not least Spellbound Kingdoms. I ran into this completely by chance and it's the only game that I've been inspired to write a F&F for (even if I didn't finish it) because it totally blind sided me. A surprisingly dark and compelling setting, but completely true to its swashbuckling principles, elegant world and rules design working together and flat out my favourite RPG combat system of all time come together to make a great game.

Has Not Actually Done Cocaine
My list would probably end up being mostly OSR/Retroclone systems, partly because most systems I've tried outside of the D&D influenced sphere have not gone well;

Call of Cthulhu/Basic Roleplaying: way too low powered for my liking, and unless you have players and a GM who are good at role-playing* it ends up being incredibly boring to play, as the actual system itself has all the flavor of cardboard

Dark Heresy: didn't actually play long enough to get a good grasp on the system, as the game fell apart during the first session as apparently the actions of one of our party members ended up derailing the adventure the GM was using to the point where he immediately gave up on the campaign

D6 Star Wars: was actually pretty decent, but still a bit mechanically bland and low powered for my liking

Chronicles of Darkness: never actually made it past character creation for various reasons, but I remember finding it very confusing

There's probably a couple of other systems on the list(vaguely recall a friend trying to run the White Wolf Street Fighter system once) but those are pretty much all the ones I can remember

*which at this point I'm inclined to believe don't actually exist, as I've done these with a couple dozen different people at this point, and not a single one of them could actually role play worth a drat(and I'm including myself here), might be part of why I tend to only have any actual fun during character creation and combat, as those tend to be the only parts of any game I've been in where anything actually interesting happens

Pretty much. In the Shadow World we summon the "Avatars" (our character class and stuff) and minor personas (example below) we have when combat ensues and use social skills and stuff on the Real World segments.

Minor Persona (sorta assist characters we use) Examples:

Hecatoncheir (Hanged Man ***)
Known as Hekatonkheires or Hecatonchires, they were giant beings from Greek myth. Having one hundred hands and fifty heads, their father Uranus found them disgusting and threw them into Tartarus. Eventually Zeus would free them and they would aid the gods against the Titans.
Tarukaja (Range 5, grants Self or Ally +2 Damage UEONT)
Foul Breath (Close Blast 3, Auto-Hit, Enemies Only. Applies -2 to their next Saving Roll)
Mamudoon (vs Will, Range 5, Burst 1, All Creatures. If this targets a Minion, kill it. If this targets something with 15 HP or less, set it to 0 HP. Fails against Necrotic Resist. Otherwise, deal 2d4+4 Necrotic Damage)
Passive: Regeneration 2
Weakness: Radiant, Fire

Clotho (Fortune ****)
Clotho is one of the three Moirae Sisters, and is derived from the Greek personification of fate. The youngest, Clotho spins the thread of life.
Me Patra (Range 5, One Ally or Self(Daze Only), Removes Dazed/Stunned/Dominated. Costs 2 Fortune Points)
Mediarama (Close Burst 5, all Friendlies. Consumes 1 Healing Surge to restore 16+1 HP)
Magarula (Range 5, Burst 1, Vs Reflex, Deals 2d8+5(Boosted) Thunder Damage to All Enemies)
Wind Boost (Enhances Thunder Damage dealt by Persona. Enhances Thunder Damage Dealt by Wielder by 25%)
Great Sukunda (vs Will, Ranged 5, -4 Reflex/Fort UEONT)
Reflect Magic (Passive. First Non-Physical, Non-Ongoing/Passive Damage of the Encounter is Halved)
Resist Thunder/Lightning 10
Weakness: Cold, Force

RPG one-shots can be a lot of fun to mix it up on breaks from campaign play. Here's a couple of good ones that are relatively cheap (or free):

Danger Patrol! - Superheros ala old serial films
Lady Blackbird - Steampunk version of Firefly
Fiasco - Coen Brothers script generator
Dread - Tense horror and also Jenga

Other than Dread they all can pretty easily be ran online mainly with just voice chat. Fiasco is especially great because you can have fun sessions just generating your own playsets. My online group has been tinkering with a "Tiki Noir" playset for awhile now.

Does that mean I don't get the job?
Out of the list of games I've played/ran, I've got:

  • D&D 4th
  • D&D 3.5
  • D&D 2e
  • Gamma World 7th ed.
  • Star Wars: Saga Edition (heavily modified)
  • Microlite D20 (Adamantine Edition)
  • Hunter: The Vigil
  • Changeling: The Lost
  • nWoD Mortals (basic rulebook)
  • Orpheus
  • The Returners RPG

Of the above list, I'd only really go back and play 4e, Gamma World, Microlite, Orpheus, and Hunter/nWoD; I don't think I'd ever go back to the overcomplicated mess of 3.5/2e/Returners, or the outright broken garbage of SW: Saga. I've played the living hell out of 4e and it's probably my favorite, but GW is really fun and the brief time I had with Microlite was enjoyable enough.

Out of the games I have that I'd like to play but haven't done so:

  • Demon: The Descent
  • Promethean: The Created
  • Wraith: The Oblivion
  • Geist: The Sin-Eater
  • FATE Accelerated
  • FFd6
  • Last Stand
  • Through the Breach
  • Fragged Empire
  • Nemesis
  • Vampire: Dark Ages
  • Shadow of the Demon Lord
  • LANCER
  • Dungeons: The Dragoning
  • Unknown Armies
  • That one Zelda RPG that /tg/ made but which is probably awful by now

I honestly don't know if I'll ever get to play even half of that list, since being an adult with no free time sucks.
