Here's a pretty recent article on the state of Flint's water:
https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2018/04/officials-say-flints-water-is-safe-residents-say-its-not-scientists-say-its-complicated/

Most relevant part:

quote:

Edwards notes that worried residents may have a point. “The data we’ve collected is now not in disagreement with the state showing that Flint is in the range of federal standards,” Edwards explains, “But that doesn’t mean its safe.” While lead service lines, the pipe that connects homes to municipal water sources, are a big source of contamination, Edwards explains that there are others that are inside the home and not owned by the government, including the glue that’s used to hold pipes together and galvanized steel pipes, which can contain lead in the coating. “It’s a risk in any old city with lead pipes,” he says.

Through the Flint Action and Sustainability Team Start program, an initiative funded by the state and federal government, officials are aiming to replace the 18,000 lead service lines across the city. As of December 2017, more than 6,000 pipes have been replaced.

Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha thinks the city should end the bottled-water service only when lead service lines can be replaced—which isn’t expected to happen until 2020.

Found while googling an unrelated subject:

The Honorable J. James Exon
United States Senator
287 Federal Building
100 Centennial Mall
North Lincoln, Nebraska 68508

Dear Senator Exon:

This is in further response to your letter of June 23, on behalf of your constituent, Dr. Robert McKeeman, in which you requested information on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulation 29 CFR 1910.1030, "Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens."

With respect to Dr. McKeeman's first question regarding OSHA requirements to prohibit all eating and drinking in the waiting room, we can clarify for him that OSHA's jurisdiction covers only employees of an establishment, not patients or clients. Paragraph (d)(2)(ix) of this regulation prohibits the consumption of food and drink by employees in areas of the establishment in which work involving exposure or potential exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) occurs, or where the potential for contamination of work surfaces exists.

OSHA, therefore, does not require that a doctor prohibit patients from eating or drinking, or mothers from feeding hungry babies, in the waiting room. Further, assuming that under the specific conditions in a given establishment it is not reasonably anticipated that a waiting patient could contaminate cups or other serving utensils which the employees would handle, serving those patients coffee would likewise not be prohibited.

Regarding Dr. McKeeman's concern that OSHA's compliance officers "... have to generate enough fines to pay for their wages, and for the expenses of the department ...," OSHA is funded through the normal governmental budgetary process, not through generation of fines. Section 17(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 states, "... Civil penalties owed under this Act shall be paid to the Secretary for deposit into the Treasury of the United States and shall accrue to the United States ...."

We hope this information is responsive to your concerns.

Sincerely,

Patricia K. Clark, Director
Directorate of Compliance Programs

BURY ME AS I LIVED, A FREE MAN ON THE CLUTCH

Years ago, I used to work in shipping and distribution. We had a rock that was in a very inappropriate place at the corner of the turn-around. It sat on the grass about 4 feet in from the curb. This rock was huge. Very obvious. Big enough to hang up a trailer. Drivers would complain about it all the time. They would piss and moan about how it was in their way but they could get around it 99% of the time.

They never understood why it was there. It was simply to make it obvious that they needed to swing wide on the turn. There was plenty of room, even with a sleeper and a 53', to make the turn. Drivers do "cut corners" though when they're tired.

When a driver would hang up their trailer on the rock and yell at me, I'd remind them that they proved the purpose of the rock. If the rock hadn't stopped them, they'd have been dragging parked cars. Suddenly having to back up a few feet and take the turn wide was better than nailing a couple cars with their tail.

We only had one dude try to power through the rock. He did screw up his trailer and dragged the rock 10 feet into the parking lot. We had to have a guy with big loader put it back for us. Still, our rock always saved cars. Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill.

Many years ago I used to drive for UPS and there was a very similar jersey barrier set out at the turn in for the warehouse, put in place for the same reason. I would guess before this block was in place in the video there were trucks taking out the fence post or scraping the poo poo out of their trailers from tight turns.

The amazing thing about this video is the sheer pigheaded persistence of the driver. No possible way he/she didn't know something was hosed and decided to power through it anyway.

If you look closely, the jersey barrier is protecting a fire hydrant. I imagine the fire department gets pretty pissed if you take one of those out.

What kind of country doesn't let tradesmen wear shorts when it's hot? Nothing in Australia would ever get built if they had to wear trousers in summer (or ever). Tradie shorts are a tradition here.

I can't think of anyone in America wearing anything other than jeans during the summer. Just more breaks to cool off/hydrate when it's hot (i.e. at least over 80F)

Just to clarify: there are no laws that say tradesmen can't wear shorts: this is purely a specific construction company rule.
