“I respect Congressman Crowley’s concerns, but there are common, straightforward and legal ways to remove candidates from the ballot in cases like this,” said WFP counsel Alex Rabb in a statement. “There are offices around the state for which the Congressmember could be nominated. The New York State Court of Appeals has found that it is standard for parties to substitute candidates after a primary election, and that the practice does not violate the letter or the spirit of the law.”

mark pocan is a leading member of the progressive caucus. he's voting no on that bill because if he votes yes and the bill fails (it'll fail, it's a republican controlled congress) he can't bring the bill to the floor again, not because he secretly wants the bill to fail. this, btw, does not prevent other democrats from voting yes on that bill.

pocan and his colleagues are going to use the bill's time on the floor to flame the gently caress out of the republicans for creating and enabling ICE child rape camps. if/when the house goes blue in november, pocan is going to bring the bill to the floor, vote yes on it and pass it to the senate where they can shame people for voting no on it // to trump's desk and permanently pin him to the policy (which helps in the 2020 election, unless trump decides to step down) or force his hand on the bill (much less likely)

this is getting as stupid as people insisting that trump isn't a putin puppet at all

You're saying that if they vote "yes" to this bill that they wouldn't be able to bring it up again even in a new congressional session. Also, that a new house member that supports abolishing ICE, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, would apparently also be unable to do so thus they need to save it for this one time only special?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you're full of poo poo. The Dems just decided that a "yes" vote would be used to campaign against them (or a "no" vote for people who haven't had their primary yet and have progressive challengers) and they are spineless so they backed down. Even though a "yes" vote would energize people to show up and vote for them.

As I understand it (and I don't necessarily understand it), if (when) the bill fails, only the "prevailing side" (in this case, the no votes) would be allowed to reintroduce it again during this Congress. (The clock resets every time there's a new Congress, and the rules are established for that Congress at the time, too.)

In this case, since it's Pocan's (among others) bill, it makes sense for him to make sure he's on the prevailing side, because that means he'd be able to reintroduce it tomorrow, in theory, rather than waiting for someone to write a new bill from scratch (which I assume they'd be able to do) and/or waiting til after the elections (which they'd certainly be able to do).

I mean, it's still all showmanship (which is to say, politics) and I don't know that it really gains them much, but it's not quite WAH WAH WAH SUCC, either.

(I think a similar Senate rule is why Mitch McConnell voted against his own bill at one point during the Long Dark Health Care Saga last year.)
