it's kind of weird that the zombie mania has abated in recent years, to be honest, because so much of it does speak to the paranoid world view of the kind of people who will vote for the first politician that promises to build them a wall to hold back the horde of hungry mouths.

I think Zombie mania ran out of steam mostly because the average person finally realizes that there won’t be any friendly factions or farm collectives. In a collapse there will only be cruel cannibalistic marauders in MAGA hats, probably within a few weeks. Also the mounting evidence that we’re edging towards an ecological disaster makes a Mad Max style apocalypse more likely. V: that too. While 'zombie preparedness' is twee bullshit, it's good for people to be disaster prepared in general. Also it's kind of unsettling for someone to be armed and willing to execute their friends, neighbors and strangers if some fictional event suddenly makes them 'not human'. red19fire fucked around with this message at 23:14 on Jul 14, 2018 |

I took a fema classes as part of my minor. people usually come together when their is big disaster with some shitheads on the side taking advantage, that being said, its also because they know the government or someone big will come and help, in case of most zombie/post apocalyptic stuff, the government is loving gone or weakened to hell and back. there is good zombie stuff its just rare in my opinion. What really pushed the medium of video games was when 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand added a dedicated button to make 50 curse

Groovelord Neato posted:metal gear solid tells its story through incredibly long cutscenes. kojima is very bad at using the medium (and i like how weird the games are). they're practically movies as it is. This is an incredibly stupid take. Metal Gear Solid 2 is built entirely around the fact that as a gamer, you are set on a pre-ordained bath. You have the illusion of freedom, but to advance you simply do as you are told. That's why at the end it's revealed that Raiden's dog tags have the players name on them, and he becomes free when he throws them away and walks out of frame, literally exits the game. It's a story that can only be told as a video game MGS3 does really interesting stuff with the player and Snake's relationship with Eva. You will note that the primary use of the "see through Snake's eyes" option is to look at Eva. First at her boobs, when she shows up and flashes her boobs to distract Snake and the player from the fact that she didn't know the passcode, and at the end into her eyes once both Snake and the player have become emotionally attached to her. That, by the way, is why people don't complain about the part where you have to carry Eva through the jungle. Gamers always complain about escort missions, and useless AI companions, but you very rarely hear complaints about the part where you have to escort an injured Eva. Because the game has made you like and respect her MGS4 of course goes back to the themes of MGS2, dealing with characters who have the freedom to take action but are stuck in a narrative they have no control over. It's something that doesn't work in any other medium, because only video games give you the ability to take action. MGSV is, of course, heavily about the player as the character. Listen to Big Boss's last tape, for fucks sake. TL,DR: you should be ashamed of yourself for confidently putting forth an opinion that only reveals how little you interacted with the text presented.

mgsv undermined the entire narrative of the series. (even though the gameplay is quite good). bioshock could only exist as a game (for the same reason as mgs2) but i wouldn't say it pushed the medium anywhere. miyazaki's the only one using the medium properly. Bioshock tried to do the same thing as MGS2, but hosed it up by including a pointless moral choice system, and not giving really any thought to the relationship between player and character
