Well, considering the source, it's more like girly homo. Also I like Adora's civilian outfit being like a military uniform jacket with a little insignia patch. It's a neat update and actually makes her look a bit more like Adam than her 'classic' design, while calling back to the idea that she was basically in the fantasy SS before she got her memories and powers back.

I like to think Bronies were so brutally persecuted that those types now feel bad about jerkin' it to childrens cartoons. Of course now instead of moving on with their lives they're trying to punish people for making them feel bad about it.

It became evident that the people making the show were not making it with the interests of (cishet) boys first and foremost, and they got to experience being entirely secondary to a media product they cared about for the first time.

Lurdiak posted:You mean the old MLP from like 10 years ago? I guess. Nothing about that fandom ever made sense to me. As I was driving to get diner I was thinking more about it, and while I don't watch the shows so I can't speak to any specifics, my instinct tells me that MLP was acceptable to them because it featured and reinforced the correct way for girls to be. And the creators of MLP also stumbled onto a dynamic that's heavily featured in anime. A selection girls with varied personalities: The shy one, the prissy one, the smart one etc. All ultimately meant to catch the eye of the male audience who buys merchandise of "their" girl. So MLP had a bunch of stereotypical non threatening girls, and the show was at best something to ignore as to girly, and at worst inadvertently synching up with the some of the creepiest parts of the anime industry's pandering to 30 year old men. Steven Universe, She Ra or the rest (probably) have women who don't exist to placate the fantasies of those men. Like the characters are either implicitly or explicitly lesbians, or that the series as a whole just acknowledges that being a gay is a valid choice. Which is threatening to them, so they want to stomp it down. Just my gut instinct on why one show is ok, and the others work them into a frothing mad frenzy.

# ? Jul 17, 2018 01:40 |

Steven Universe also has a boy who’s a failure at masculinity in the same ways that they are (fat, introverted, sensitive, into video games) but who responds by caring about others and building community instead of retreating into isolation and hollow consumerism. They probably hate seeing their weakness reflected back at them and overcome with the help of a collective of gay power moms.

I'm seeing the Utena in the fashion but not in the art style. There's a heavy dose of influence from the classic She-ra's visual style, especially when it comes to the color temperatures and the backgrounds.

Samuringa posted:A bit of the 70s, but modernized? I like this. I really dislike that She-Ra art. It all comes down to how it looks in motion (I will almost certainly never watch this show so I don’t actually care). My son used to watch MLP (as a 5 year old, not a 25 year old). It’s been a while but I remember really disliking the show. Everyone was lovely to one another while pretending to be friends. It didn’t feel like a positive message for kids and it wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. I dunno, it was years ago.

Those She-Ra stills look cool. I guess they're making Catra into something other than a generic evil lieutenant? The comments on that article are crazy. The right wing nerd take on this reboot appears to be that it's social justice gone mad because She-Ra has "a boyish hairline...broad shoulders," etc and therefore is clearly going to be transgender in the show, which of course would be terrible and very bad. The amount of toxicity these people are bringing to literally preview stills of a reboot of a failed children's cartoon that ran for one year in the 80s is staggering.

She-Ra does kinda look like the lead singer of an 80s hair metal band, I just don't get why people think that's a bad thing. Why are the only two ways to draw a woman in a cartoon supposed to be Ditko era Aunt May or Jim Lee era Psylocke?

I'm not a girl or a child so I can't possibly care less about She-Ra, but it will be funny seeing white men melt down that it's not like "their" She-Ra.

I don't see anything boyish about her at all, although I am a little surprised they didn't try to give her visible muscles at all. From what I've seen the original She-Ra's style was pretty poo poo, so getting away from that's probably a positive.

# ? Jul 17, 2018 16:45 |

Well she doesn't have giant breasts and isn't mostly naked, therefore she is clearly boyish.

Don't the incel chuds use He-Man (and only He-Man, and even he isn't an example of it) as an example of unrealistic standards of beauty for men? I would imagine that until this moment, they considered She-Ra just another betrayal of helpless men by the brutal gynocracy.

They don't actually think that, it's just something they bring up to shut up anyone complaining about their titty anime or whatever. Just like they don't give a poo poo about woman-on-man abuse or men's shelters.

They have pretty consistently loss their poo poo at even the suggestion of desexualizing character designs for women. Winter probably infuriates them. Even though they barely go outside and have normal human contact anyway. business hammocks posted:Don't the incel chuds use He-Man (and only He-Man, and even he isn't an example of it) as an example of unrealistic standards of beauty for men? I would imagine that until this moment, they considered She-Ra just another betrayal of helpless men by the brutal gynocracy. I love that argument because even at a glance it doesn't make loving sense. Superheroes having muscles, which you can get through working out for the most part, is not the same as a woman having huge breasts and certain hip ratios. They also literally don't even represent the same thing, which is why dudes can walk around topless and be on a kid's cartoon topless, but women can actually get into trouble over cleavage. It's preposterous.
