Yeah even ancient societies that though the sun revolved around the earth still had otherwise pretty accurate tracking of stars and planets. Hell it was only from examination of those records that people eventually realized that the only thing that didn't fit the model was the sun/earth relationship itself.

Well, possibly? I don't think I've read about that one, but the issue is that a lot of the agriculture we do now is in formerly arid areas where we wouldn't see much forest growth. Also, vegetation isn't actually a super great CO2 sink, as plants and trees both respire and exhale CO2 in winter and at night, and eventually die, rot, or burst into flames in wildfires. Plant and tree cover can also contribute to heating at the surface by being darker, leafy and green, than bare soil or sand.

I found a cite: https://amp.theguardian.com/theguardian/2011/jan/26/genghis-khan-eco-warrior

It doesn't read like it would make a huge difference.

My guess for CK2 is September. Seven months is a pretty common point from first dev diary to release, and the first CK2 diary for this dlc came out at the end of January.

Steel, rifling and many other things were well known before industrialization, but it took the ability to mass produce steel and fabricate it in a big way, to say, make large rifled cannons or modern turreted armored warships, even though many of these things could exist beforehand.

Technology is a very multifaceted thing.

They occasionally enjoy releasing HOI DLCs on historic dates but December 7th is a bit far out. I'll say maybe late October for that one.

I really appreciate all the input so far on this mod, wanting to make sure it finds that fine line between fun and realism. I am really glad to see all the discussion and interest that has been generated.

Here are the updated Trade Goods list. Blank cells are simply cells I haven't been able to find info on/haven't come up with anything yet.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Also, I setup a subreddit like all the cool mods have and posted my first "dev diary". I will probably keep most updates over there, but I hope I can still turn to here on occassion because, let's face it, goons are actually pretty cool (except for when they aren't) and comments on reddit are just the worst. But it makes a good platform for something like this.

Reveilled posted:

If you've got any interest in reading about the practicalities of a post-apocalyptic world, I'd recommend The Knowledge by Lewis Dartnell as a really interesting book on the topic. It's a sort of pop-science book that goes through the basics of what you'd need to restart society--basic chemistry and metallurgy, medicine and electricity.

There's an interesting notion in the book that different fields are differently replicable by a post-apocalyptic society, some technologies are basically just knowing a reliable process that any society could replicate, while others rely on globalised trade networks and infrastructure it makes no sense to rebuild. So a post-apocalyptic society could easily look like a weird mishmash of medieval, industrial and modern technologies, because building, for example, modern houses is way easier than building modern ships.

Thank you for this recommendation. I'm going to put a hold on it at the library and will pick it up soon.

Thoughts:

Aggressive Expansion is a little hard to read, but not to such a degree that I've ever felt it was a problem. And I very, very much like the fact that it can vary wildly country to country depending on what you're doing and what they care about. I definitely would not like to sacrifice the latter in the hope of solving the former.

Unless all we're talking about here is a little topbar number telling you what your highest AE with any country is. Or "average (highest)". That could work?

Also: yay! Defensive leagues!

And all this impassable terrain makes me hard:

Some of it may be, some of it may just might not be filled in yet. There was much more "wasteland" the last time we saw the map. I'm guessing even more provinces will be added in parts of it. Particularly, it doesn't make sense for there to be light gray wasteland in eastern europe followed by terra incognita. Maybe some of that will be filled in?

Every resource label is a single province. There are several spots where you can see multiple of the same resource labeled next to each other, like the clump of horses along the Indus.

edit: Then again, there are some large, oddly shaped spots with one label like the grain in Mesopotamia, so I dunno.

I had forgotten about how insane it is. All I can say is good luck, ExtraNoise. Doing a single-person mod in CK2 was hard enough, and maddening with all the provinces. I don't know how someone can do a mod for I:R without just getting completely dissuaded by how immense these maps are supposed to be.

Check out that big blob of grain in the Egyptian delta. It's got enclaves. Has to be agglomerated.

Also: was the western desert really populated enough to justify all those provinces?

This is the same "Name" fallacy that comes up again and again in Paradox's forums. Crusader Kings is not just about being a crusader king, and in fact some of the most fun gameplay is in the other 75% of the map.
