mlmp08 posted:Kansas City is pretty cool though. I drove that stretch last week as well, except from KC to Wichita. That stretch looks positively bustling compared to when you continue past Wichita and eventually into New Mexico. I've driven from San Diego to St Louis via Phoenix and Denver. America has lots of empty spaces in which we place our racists and nutjobs.

Currently living in Wichita. Kris Kobach is running for governor on a platform of pure racism. He had Donald Trump Jr at a rally here last night. Kobachs current campaign commercial is blaming undocumented immigrants for the steep tuition rise, because they pay in-state rates (all 300 of them currently using this). Of course it has nothing to do with the fact that he and his cohorts have slashed taxes to the bone, including cutting taxes to zero on all LLCs.

The real welfare queens are now recognized as persons since Citizens United. But they can't be drafted, jailed, or put on jury duty. They also face no penalty for renouncing citizenship to avoid paying taxes. But if you propose sending bailout money to the consumer instead they look at you like you've got a dick growing out of your forehead. Remember, the T in T.A.R.P. stands for toxic, not troubled...

That Works posted:It just makes him a person that will kick 'Sandy Hook = false flag' types off but not holocaust deniers. Fairly sure he conclusively said the opposite - that he wouldn't kick Sandy Hook deniers off unless they started attacking individuals. Same with holocaust deniers. Steezo posted:Not wanting the government to shoo them off the public square is one thing, providing them a private platform is another thing entirely. Facebook could show them the door and even I wouldn't complain. The fact that it's not illegal for Facebook to eject holocaust deniers/conspiracy theorists/republicans (because be honest, that's what you're asking for) off of its platform does not mean Facebook should eject holocaust deniers/conspiracy theorists/republicans. I'm not saying they shouldn't. I wouldn't be broken up about it. A company like Facebook or an individual like Zuckerburg can still have certain values though, and I think freedom of speech is absolutely a value that they are promoting. It's a consistent theme throughout the whole interview. Now, you can think that affording such freedom of speech to everyone (unless they're a jihadi, threatening physical violence, or whatever) is a bad idea. But conflating support for the principle of freedom of speech with support for extremist viewpoints is intellectually dishonest. It's "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" in a nutshell. Not much more, not much less. So to lighten the mood, let's look at some more Democratic ball-sitting and weird purity testing as Bernie Sanders and Not-elected-yet-but-whatever Rising Superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez visit Kansas for some reason: In one corner, the progressive Sanders/Ocasio selection, a white dude: quote:On Friday, they will rally for Brent Welder, a former labor lawyer running on a platform of “Medicare for All,” a $15 an hour minimum wage, tuition-free public college, and reducing big money’s influence in politics. “Brent can win, he can win,” Ocasio-Cortez said on The Dig, a podcast from Jacobin magazine. “And he can not only win his primary, but he can win in a red-to-blue district on a progressive vision. And I think that’s so exciting.” and in the other corner, the big money "establishment" candidate, a Native American lesbian: quote:To make their case, however, they’ll have to get past EMILY’s List first. Last week, the group’s Super PAC Women Vote! dropped $400,000 on an ad to support Sharice Davids, a lesbian, Native American, amateur mixed martial arts fighter who was a fellow in the Obama administration. The ad plays on Davids’s MMA background: “She never backs down; not in the ring, not to the NRA, or Trump and the Republicans in Washington. … She’s fierce, she’s progressive, and she’s a fighter.” Huh.
